Sierra City

Sierra City is a tiny town in Sierra County within the Gold Country of California.

Sierra City was established in 1850, and grew to a peak population of 3,000 during the Gold Rush. Local mines included the Colombo Mine, the Independence Mine, the Keystone Mine, the Monumental Mine, the William Tell Mine, and the Great Sierra Buttes Mine. The Monumental Nugget, weighing over 106 pounds, was found in 1869 at the Sierra Buttes Mine.

Get in

California State Route 49 is the sole highway into town. The Pacific Crest Trail passes near Sierra City, and many hikers will visit the town for a drink or to pick up supplies before continuing on their marathon journey.

An hour+ tour is offered twice each day at 11AM and 2PM to see the stamp mill of a gold mine. • 🌍 Wild Plum Campground. Open from early May until mid-October, this forest service campground offers 47 sites, 24 of which are tent-only. All sites have a picnic table and campfire ring.
