Purulia is the district headquarters and administrative centre of the district of the same name. Purulia district is the western most district of the state of West Bengal.

Purulia city can be accessed either by bus or by train from any of the major cities like Kolkata, Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Asansol, Ranchi.

Get around

Purulia is an interesting blend of nature and history. Purulia has lush green mountain ranges with rocky outcrops. It is a place for adventure sports like rock climbing. During the winter rock climbing, camping and nature study courses are held in the outscarts of the Purulia town. Purulia also has a rich heritage several archeological sites of Hindu and Jain origin are found near the town. Purulia lacks proper public transport to explore the town and the surrounding it is best to hire a car. Hotels can arrange for cars.

  • 🌍 Banda Temple, Raghunathpur II Block (35 km from Purulia). Probably a Jain Temple and the most preserved stone temple of Purulia District. Built in 11th century AD the temple is a protected monument under the ASI. The 75-m sandstone temple is built in rekh deul style with a trirath projection. It is crowned with a lotus shaped finial. The temple stands on a square base of side 14 feet (aprox.). The entrance measuring 6.5 feet in hight and 3 feet in breadth and faces north. The inner sanctum is located below the ground level and is completely empty. The lower portion of the eastern wall contains a stone elephant head, which probably served as a water outlet. The outer walls contain beautiful stone decoration of mainly floral and geometric nature. The temple stands inside a stone walled complex and in front of the temple is a flat roofed pillared structure, part of which has long collapsed. Free Entry. 
  • 🌍 Deulghata (Boram) (27 km from Purullia. From Purulia take the Purulia - Ranchi road. Reach Joypur, take left turn pass through a level crossing and head south. Cross the Kangshabati River over a bridge and take the dirt road on the left to reach Deulghata temples). Deulghat contains two brick built temples. Both follow the rekh deul form of architecture which originated from the neighboring state of Odisha. None of the two contains any foundation plaques but according to experts they date back to the 11 - 13 th century. The temples are on a high platform and inner sanctum is approached through a narrow corbelled arch entrance. The temples have several projections on the outer wall. These projections start from the base and go all the up to the top of the pinnacle. The top is generally crowned with a lotus shaped stone finial. The two temples have lost there finial and so the exact height of the finial can longer be determined. The other walls of both the temples are decorated with decorative bricks. The deuls of Deulghata contains miniature deuls as part of the decorative brick ornamentation. The three walls (apart from the entrance) in both the temples have shallow depressions, which probably housed statues of Jain Tirthankaras. They have long gone missing. The entire region surrounding the two temples of Deulghata is littered with brick and stone slabs. It indicates that the region once had a number of stone and brick temples. The last temple collapsed on 30 September 2000. It was also brick built and higher than the two existing temples and was between the two. Today the outline of the base is all that survives. A newly constructed temple houses several of the stone statues. which were recovered from the old temples. Free Entry.
