Early life
Williams was born and raised in Narrandera, New South Wales, and is of Aboriginal Australian (Wiradjuri) descent on his father's side; his mother was of Bosnian descent.[1][2]
He grew up playing an array of sports including basketball and rugby league, but focused mainly on Australian rules football.[3] Williams played junior football for the Narrandera Eagles in the Riverina Football Netball League and joined Greater Western Sydney's academy program at the age of 15.[4] He became the first academy graduate to join GWS's list when he was selected with pick 54 in the 2013 rookie draft by the Giants.[5]
AFL career
In April 2013, he was promoted from the rookie list to the senior list,[6] and made his debut in round five in the 2013 season. He earned the round 19 nomination for the 2013 AFL Rising Star award.[7]
On 24 May 2017, it was announced that he would wear number 67 on his jersey, rather than his usual 29, for the round 10 Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round game against West Coast. This was to commemorate the 1967 referendum (which allowed Indigenous Australians to be counted with the general population in the national census).[8]
