Composition and musical style
The music on Welcome to the New has been described as jazz in parts,[4] to having a rock and dance music flair of the 1970s and 80s,[5] and sound like they have been influenced by The Black Keys.[6][7] This album features some rhythm and blues, urban contemporary gospel, Christian country, and Irish folk that was inspired by touring with Rend Collective.[8][9]
"Welcome to the New" is an upbeat light pop song with elements of synth rock,[10][11] and contains some jazz parts,[4] which has the electric guitar guiding the song with other instruments of forceful drums and guitar riffs.[12] In addition, it is a delectable track "with its bouncy, brassy, pop hook [that] will remind believers that Pharrell's 'Happy' is okay but we can get happiness-plus with joy."[8] The next three tracks have been referred to as "electro-fueled rock and worship numbers".[10] The song "Gotta Let It Go" is a song in the vein of Smash Mouth that contains a forceful modern rock essence to the beat.[11] It has been referred to as "a fuzzed out retro rocker".,[8] and some even suggest that the song harkens back to U2's music around the Achtung Baby period, which particularly like "The Fly".[9]
"Shake" is the lead single and is an uptempo dancing-esque song,[12] which has been referred to as Motown pop.[7] "Greater" is the second single from the album that is an Americana track with folk and country elements and some acoustic elements,[5][13] which has a "campfire sing-along" vibe,[7] and this takes a cue from Rend Collective's music.[9] The song "Finish What He Started" is a highly emotive song,[5][12] which is a ballad that has resonate drums, weighty bass elementation and massive guitar hooks.[14] "Flawless" is a piano centered ballad that features some synths and electronic music aspects.[5][12]
The song "New Lease on Life" is a Southern rock song with some Gospel overtones,[5] and has been referred to as a positive bluesy song,[15] with a "dirty blues riff",[8] that is a garage rock type of song,[10] which has a commercial appeal.[7] "Wishful Thinking" is a soulful song,[4] with some "haunting saxophone riffs" to the ballad,[5] and even features a church type organ.[14] The song "Burn Baby Burn" is a synth-based alternative rock anthem.[5][11] "Dear Younger Me" is described as being autobiographical to Bart Millard's life that is highly emotive.[5]
Release and promotion
The album was promoted by the release of the lead single, "Shake", on November 12, 2013 that peaked at No. 9 on the Christian Airplay charts,[16] No. 2 on the Christian Digital Songs chart,[17] No. 6 on the Christian Songs chart,[18] No. 8 on the Christian AC Songs chart, No. 14 on the Christian AC/CHR chart, No. 3 on the Christian AC Indicator.[19] The second single, "Greater", was released on March 25, 2014 in promotion of the album's release, and spent 16 weeks at No. 1 on the Christian Airplay chart,[20] and peaked at No. 2 on both the Christian Digital Songs chart[17] and the Christian Songs chart.[18] The third single, "Flawless", was released on April 21, 2015 and also peaked at No. 2 on the Christian Songs chart[18] and No. 1 on the Christian Airplay Chart.[16]
