Wayang klithik is a puppet (wayang) made from wood originating from East Java and Central Java, Indonesia. In contrast to wayang golek which is similar to dolls, wayang klitik is flat shaped like wayang kulit.[1]

Wayang klitik.

This wayang was first created by Pangeran Pekik, Duchy of Surabaya, from leather and small in size so it is more often called the krucil puppet. The appearance of wooden puppets made of wood, made Pakubuwono II then created klithik puppets made of flat wood (two dimensions). This puppet hand is made from carved leather. Unlike other puppets, klithik puppets have handles made of wood. When the stage gives the sound "klithik, klithik" which is believed to be the origin of the term mentioning klithik puppets.[2]

In Central Java, Wayang klitik have a shape similar to the wayang gedog. The characters wear dodot rapekan, rusty, and use a headdress (fan). In East Java many characters resemble puppet purwa, the kings are crowned and wear praba. In Central Java, the king figures were curled up in Keling or Garuda Mungkur alone.

Wayang klitik story repertoire is also different from wayang kulit. Where the repertoire of wayang kulit stories is taken from epic Ramayana and Mahabharata, the repertoire of wayang klitik stories is taken from the Panji and Damarwulan story cycles.

The story used in the Klithik wayang generally takes from the Panji Kudalaleyan era in Pajajaran to the time of Prabu Brawijaya in Majapahit. However, it is possible for wayang krucil to use wayang purwa and wayang scary stories, even from Babad Tanah Jawi.

The gamelan used to accompany the puppet show is very simple, Slendro-tuned and rhythmic playon bangomati (srepegan). There are times when klithik puppets use large music.[3]
