Wassan

Wassan (Sindhi: وساڻ (Perso-Arabic), वस्सान (Devanagari)) is a Sindhi tribe found in Sindh, Pakistan. After the independence in 1947, Hindu Wassans emigrated to India.

Distribution

Wassan is a surname of the cast from Ramgharia. The Wassan are found mainly in the Sanghar District and Khairpur District of Sindh. Haji Nawab Khan Wassan and Pir Gudo in Kotdiji Taluka in Khairpur District are important villages of the tribe. Riaz Hussain Wassan is a bureaucrat from Wassan family of Khairpur and is a prominent public figure, social activist and the founder of "Education Is Freedom Campaign" in Sindh<www.twitter.com/rhwassan></www.facebook.com/riaz.h.wassan>. Khan Bahadur Wassan of Kandiari and Khan Muhammad Wassan and his elder brother Haji Muhammad Saleh Wassan known as a famous horse rider in Sanghar District as well as in Sindh Provence. He also breeds many horse species in his form house known as village Haji Muhammad Mureed Wassan near Kandiari District Sanghar. In District Sanghar has remained prominent people of Wassan community.

The Wassan community politically supports two political parties: Pakistan Muslim League (F) and Pakistan Peoples Party. The supporters of both enjoy good relationship to one another on the basis of being members of same community. A sizeable number of the members of Wassan community are known as the followers of Sufi Pir Pagara (a spiritual Leader) and a prominent political figure of Pakistan. The name of Muhammad Khan Wassan is famous in Wassan family and as well as in agriculturist. He introduced a new variety of cotton in Sindh. Muhammad Khan Wassan cultivated the cotton at his farm Abbas Farms in Shahdadpur and grew a bumper production of cotton and then he launched it to other areas of Sindh.

Wassans are widespread throughout Pakistan, India and Saudi Arabia. There are many prominent poets, directors and writers in this caste, such as Hassan Wassan. He is the first Program Director, Producer, host, reporter and model on various TV channels since 1996. Wafa Hakim Wassan has two books which are available: Ujra Gorha Mera Gal (Sindhi) and Chund Nainan Main (Sindhi).
