History

View of the church c. 1885

During the middle ages, there was a stave church in the Vistdal valley, about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) south of Myklebostad (at Nerland). The earliest known records of that church date back to 1494, but there are records of the parish that date back to 1432.

In 1660, a new church was built at Myklebostad, a few kilometers north of the existing church. The new cruciform church replaced the old church, but the old church was not torn down until about 1668. Around the middle of the 1800s, the church was deemed to be too small for the parish.

In 1869, a new church (the present church) was built to replace the older one. The new church was built just outside the existing cemetery to the south of the old church.[3][4][5]
