Vayyar

Vayyar Imaging Ltd. (Hebrew:  ואיאר הדמאה בע"מ) is an Israeli semiconductor company that develops intelligent radar sensors for 3D imaging. Initially developed for the purpose of detecting cancer with SOC radar technology, Vayyar sensors have since been employed in a number of other sectors,[1]including automotive, construction, agriculture, smart homes, robotics and medical care.[2]

Vayyar has around 120 employees as of March 2019.[3] The company is based in Israel with operations spanning across the globe.

History

Vayyar was founded in 2011 by Raviv Melamed, Miri Ratner and Naftali Chayat.[4][5] CEO Raviv Melamed was previously VP of Architecture Group at Intel and General Manager of Intel's Worldwide Mobile Wireless Group.[6]The company is based in Yehud.[7] The company's name "Vayyar," is derived from the biblical term וירא[8] in the book of Genesis, meaning "to see."

Its 3D sensor technology was originally developed for detection of breast cancer, as a more accessible and effective alternative to mammograms.[9][10] Over time, Vayyar expanded to the following industries: automotive, retail, security, construction, elderly care, Smart Home, electornics quality testing, agriculture and more.[11]

In May 2012, the company secured its seed round of funding. Since then there have been a total of four rounds of fundraising, raising $188 million in venture funds.[12]

Products

Some of Vayyar’s consumer products are marketed under the “Walabot” brand, launched in 2016. One product is the Walabot DIY, a wall scanner that employs Vayyar technology in the field of home improvement. This advanced stud finder can see through drywall, concrete and plaster to detect what's behind the wall.[13]Similar in appearance to the Walabot DIY is the Walabot Maker line, a group of programmable sensor products for programmers and engineers. Another product is the Walabot HOME, a fall detection sensor in the field of elderly care currently employed in retirement homes, hospitals and private residences. [14]

In the automotive industry, Vayyar technology delivers solutions for both car exteriors and in-cabin monitoring. Externally, the sensors are used for obstacle avoidance, reverse sensors and ADAS, while in-cabin, they offer Child Presence Detection (CPD), passenger status, seat belt reminders and gesture control.[6] Additionally, an automotive evaluation kit was launched in 2018. For developers and engineers, Vayyar manufactures Network Analyzers, and university development kits. In homeland security, Vayyar develops weapons-detection technology. In smart retail and manufacturing, Vayyar offers smart-shelves, gesture detection and sensors for industrial robots. They also have an array of Smart Home products, including multiple integration solutions with smart appliances. For agriculture and livestock, Vayyar offers root/soil saturation as well as milk/liquid analysis. Their sensors also test WiFi and cellphones for signal quality.

In addition, Vayyar manufactures an EVK that allows software developers and engineers to work with its radar sensors and 3D imaging technology for their own applications.[15]

Awards and Recognition

In 2019, Vayyar received the following mentions:

  • Fast Company’s “World’s Most Innovative Companies”
  • Digital Insurance Agenda "DIAmond" for being among "the most promising Insurtech companies in the industry."[16]
