Urimaikural (Voice for Rights) is a 1974 Indian Tamil-language drama film, directed by C. V. Sridhar and produced by Y. Kannaiah. The film stars M. G. Ramachandran, Latha, Anjali Devi and V. S. Raghavan in lead roles. The film had musical score by M. S. Viswanathan. Box office hit in 1974. It is a Silver Jubilee movie at Madurai and ran more than 100 days in Chennai, Madurai, Trichi, Kovai, and other cities.[1][2][3]

Plot

Ponmedhu, an attractive piece of heaven in the Tamil countryside, in the 70s...

Gobi (MGR) and his elder brother Soundharam Pilai (S. V. Sahasranamam) are very close, live under the same roof, and are very respected farmers.

Gobi shares his time also to tease the young women of his village and particularly, the very beautiful Radha (Latha), his betrothed, endowed with a temperament, brave and very roguish.

But above everything, 2 young people love each other profoundly and do not dare to declare it overtly.

Of teasings in mutual harmless quarrels, 2 lovers who only yesterday, bickered, do not joke any more at the moment.

They are not any more for the party, because a good-for-nothing son of the only big landed family of neighborhood, Doreswamy (M.N.Nambhiyar) wishes Radha ardently for his wife.

Grasping this, the father (V. S. Raghavan) of the young woman sees the opportunity there to grow rich and forget the promise made to Gobi' s family.

Another drama comes to darken more profoundly the picture of this family so welded: a strong sum of money collected in the village and under the responsibility of Soundharam Pilai is stolen from him by unknowns. Doreswamy is behind this theft because he was always jealous of Gobi and so wishes to damage the brothers, to soil their honor especially.

He quenches so his vengeance to have been corrected by Gobi, some time previously.

To fight this terrible test, Gobi and Soundharam mortgage their most precious good: their land.

They are given one year to resolve the situation.

But other painful events are going to precipitate things, very negatively...

Production

Sridhar, who was reeling under financial problems, decided to collaborate with MGR who agreed to act under this direction.[4]

Soundtrack

The music was composed by M. S. Viswanathan.Vizhiye kadhai ezgudhu song penned bt Kannadasan set to khambhoji raaga was added by Director Sridhar when political issues led to a widening rift between MGR amd Kannadasan.But Sridhar could not get a satisfactory response to the situation.So, Sridhar and MSV decided to convince MGR to have Kannadasan's song and MGR okayed the proposal as he bore no personal grudge against the lyricist.[5]
