USTA Tennis on Campus

Tennis on Campus (TOC) is the national collegiate club tennis league operated by the United States Tennis Association. The league is played on played on indoor and outdoor hard courts in World TeamTennis format. Over 400 American universities and colleges throughout the 15 USTA geographical sections compete in the league.[2]

The league's regular season takes place in the fall and spring along with 4 major tournaments, culminating with the National Championship in Orlando, Florida.[3]

Competition format

The regular season games are played in tournaments which are hosted by individual universities at their campus tennis facilities or a local tennis center. The matches are played in mixed gender World TeamTennis format which features 4 separate brackets in tournaments, copper, bronze, silver, and gold in a pool play system.[2] Gold is the leading bracket which is the overall champion of each tournament.[4]

During a game, there is 5 matches played with a minimum of 4 players on a team.[5]

Major tournaments

Outside the regular season, there are 4 major tournaments officially hosted by the USTA held seasonally that earn a bid to the National Championship. All the 4 tournaments--(Spring and Fall Invitationals, Sectional Championships, and the National Championship) all feature free merchandise for the players, alongside professional photographers.[6] The champions of each tournament earn an automatic bid to Nationals.[7]

The 4 major tournaments are hosted at major or professional tennis centers at rotating venues nationalwide.[8]

Sectional Championships

The primary Tennis on Campus major tournament are the Sectional Championships, which the 15 USTA sections host a championship tournament that their respective regional teams compete to win the title and trophy.[9]

Spring and Fall Invitationals

The TOC Spring and Fall Invitationals are national tournaments that 64 schools from all sections. The 2020 the Fall Invitational was to be hosted at Cary, North Carolina and the Spring Invitational at Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas but both were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[10][11]

USTA Tennis on Campus National Championship

The USTA Tennis on Campus National Championship is the pinnacle tournament of United States club tennis hosted in April at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.[3][12] The tournament is played on outdoor hard courts.[3] A pool of 64 schools throughout the nation whom were the champions of their respective Sectional Championship or the Fall/Spring Invitational earn a bid to Nationals.[7] After the National Championship game there is an awards ceremony.[13]

The tournament lasts 4 days and the matches are livestreamed on YouTube with live commentary.[14][15]
