In 1986, the Lenoir Memorial Foundation was established to provide an avenue for making special gifts in honor or memory of friends and loved ones. Donations are used to purchase major equipment and to sponsor public health awareness programs. The Foundation operates fund-raisers such as the Cradle Crowd, Charity Golf Tournament, and the Holiday Benefit Reception.[2] The New Lenoir Memorial Hospital by Mike Kohler from 200 years of Progress. A report of the history and achievements of the people of Lenoir County. Copyright 1976 Kinston-Lenoir County Bicentennial Commission. In 1965 it became apparent that the old Lenoir Memorial Hospital was outdated and too small to serve the growing community of Kinston and Lenoir County. Little space was available for expansion and renovation and expansion was deemed unsatisfactory. After more than eight years of planning a new modern $11 million facility on the Airport Road became a reality when it opened its doors in June 1973. The 285-bed hospital offers the latest in equipment and design and is one of the finest facilities in the state. Looking ahead to the future, it was built under a long-range planning program and can be expected to accommodate 435 patients. Its features include a modern intensive care and cardiac care centers with the latest in electronic patient monitoring equipment. A full-service laboratory and X-Ray treatment room and an extensive program in continuing in-service education for hospital employees. Under the leadership of L. Dan Duval, hospital director, over 700 people are employed in the comfort and care of patients.
