Timeline of Lucknow Metro

The Lucknow Metro project is the most expensive public transport system in the state of Uttar Pradesh,total cost of phase 1&2 will be about $2 billion, costing 6,928 crore (US$971 million) in Phase 1 of construction, first lane of which has been made operational by 6 September 2017.[1][2][3] Lucknow Metro is expected to cover 140 km in the city in total 4 phases in next 25 years.

Lucknow Metro will be having two routes, from North to South and East to West. The North-South corridor starts at Amausi to Munshi Pulia, with a total length of 22.878 km (14.216 mi). The East-West corridor starts at Charbagh Railway Station and ends at Vasant Kunj. Both lines will intersect at Charbagh. An extension line from Indira Nagar – Polytechnic Crossing – Gomti Nagar will extend it to Patrakarpuram, Gomti Nagar.[4] The difference between arrival time of trains at each station is 7 minutes.[5] This would be reduced to 5 minutes and then to 3 minutes in phases. The first phase of the project has been launched in 6 September 2017.[1][2][3]

The Lucknow Metro is the fastest built and commissioned metro system in the world.[6][7][8][9][10]

Project Timeline

  • September 2008: DMRC submits a concept paper after the Lucknow metro rail project is proposed by the Government of Uttar Pradesh.
  • October 2008: The metro rail project in Lucknow is cleared by Lucknow Development Authority (LDA).
  • February 2009: An agreement is signed between DMRC and LDA.[4]
  • June 2009: A Bangalore-based company hired by DMRC studies traffic pattern of Lucknow.
  • July 2009: Geotechnical survey initiated by DMRC.
  • April 2010: Traffic and transportation report is submitted by DMRC.
  • May 2010: DMRC and a committee headed by the Chief Secretary of Government of Uttar Pradesh start consultation process related to traffic issues.
  • June 2010: DMRC submits the route alignment plan. The Divisional Commissioner of Lucknow is asked to coordinate with the concerned departments.
  • August 2010: DMRC presents the detailed route plan.
  • September 2010: The committee headed by the Divisional Commissioner consults DMRC on the route once okay.
  • July 2011: A Detailed Project Report (DPR) is submitted.
  • June 2013: The state cabinet headed by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav gave clearance to the metro rail network.[11][12][13] The state cabinet also gave approval for the creation of Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation.[11][12][13]
  • August 2013: Government of Uttar Pradesh approved the revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) submitted by DMRC.[14]
  • October 2013: LMRC, a special purpose vehicle (SPV) is formed by the Government of Uttar Pradesh to build and operate the Lucknow Metro.[15] The SPV is incorporated under Companies Act, 1956 on 25 November 2013.[15] Construction Phase to begin in December.[15][16]
  • November 2013: DMRC pitches for Lucknow Metro work, assures first phase completion by Feb 2017.[17]
  • December 2013: Government of India, in principle, approves the project.[18]
  • February 2014: E. Sreedharan appointed as Principal Adviser of Lucknow metro.
  • March 2014: Foundation stone laid for Lucknow Metro project.
  • 10 July 2014: 100 crores rupees were set aside for Lucknow Metro in the Union Budget, by Finance Minister Of India Arun Jaitley.[19]

Red Line

  • 27 September 2014: Construction begins on the Lucknow Metro.[20]
  • 6 August 2015: Lucknow Metro got clearance from Public Investment Board (PIB) of Government of India.[21][22]
  • 22 December 2015: Union Cabinet has approved the construction of Rail Project Phase - 1A.[23][24]
  • 30 March 2016: To speed up clearance processes for Lucknow Metro, LMRC becomes a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh.[25] As a result, the LMRC board is reconstituted with five nominee directors being nominated by both Government of India and Government of Uttar Pradesh each, apart from the three full-time directors. Additionally, the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh is replaced by the Union Urban Development Secretary as the ex-officio Chairman of LMRC.[25]
  • 18 September 2016: 90% of the work completed in the construction of Rail Project Phase - 1A.
  • 20 October 2016: Lucknow metro begins work on Faizabad Road, does Bhoomi puja for Phase 1B.[26][27]
  • 1 December 2016: The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh flagged off the train at the Transport Nagar depot on a trial run on priority section till the Alambagh Station.[28] The inaugural ride was piloted by two women.[29]
  • 20 June 2017: Fifth metro train set arrives at Transport Nagar depot.[30]
  • 23 June 2017: As per E. Sreedharan, Kochi metro was built in four years whereas Lucknow Metro will be completed in a period of two years and nine months, and that would be the fastest in India and the world till now.[7]
  • 8 July 2017: Sixth and final metro train set arrives for first phase requirement.[31]
  • 26 July 2017: The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CMRS) is scheduled to make an on-site inspection of operational preparedness of the Lucknow Metro Rail service this week before giving the much-awaited green light to the project to be thrown open to the public. The CMRS is expected to carry out the inspection on 27 and 28 July.[32]
  • 29 Aug 2017: Lucknow metro to be inaugurated on 5 September 2017. The metro trains will ply between Transport Nagar and Charbagh.[33][34]
  • 5 September 2017: Minister of Home Affairs and Member of Parliament for Lucknow Rajnath Singh and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurate Lucknow metro.[1][2][3]
  • 23 February 2019: Work on whole of North-South Corridor (Red Line) completed, CMRS approves for commercial run. Full line to be inaugurated on 8 March 2019.[35][36][37]
  • 8 March 2019: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates full stretch of Red Line of Lucknow Metro.[38]

Blue Line

  • Aug 2019: Modified DPR is yet to be approved by state government and also LMRC is yet to get land for Metro deport which is to come up near upcoming Vasant Kunj metro station. [39]
