Plot

Helan Mingyu is a lady from the aristocratic Helan family and is destined to become the Empress. She falls in love with Xiao Chengxu, the ninth prince of the Sheng Kingdom. When news of his death spread across the kingdom, she is forced to marry the third prince Xiao Chengrui. Entangled in court conflicts, Xiao Chengxu helps Xiao Chengrui become the Emperor. Later, Xiao Chengxu later finds out the devastating truth behind his mother's death and his father's passing of the throne. He is determined to overthrow Xiao Chengrui, but Xiao Chengrui suddenly dies from illness. Helan Mingyu becomes the Empress Dowager and her son Xiao Qiyuan ascends as the new Emperor of Sheng.

To stabilize the court, Xiao Chengxu assists the young Xiao Qiyuan as Emperor. However, he cannot suppress his feelings for Helan Mingyu and desires to marry her. As Xiao Qiyuan grows older, he begins to suspect Xiao Chengxu of having a love affair with his mother. His suspicion eventually leads to Xiao Chengxu's death in battle. Helan Mingyu is conflicted, but values her kingdom more than her lover. Xiao Qiyuan isn't content with his life after being forced to marry a woman he doesn't love. His favorite consort, Dong Ruoxuan passes away from illness and he dies of grief. Helan Mingyu eventually becomes Grand Empress Dowager, and helps her grandson ascend to the throne.

gollark: Hmm, so it's particularly useless to you, then.
gollark: If god's plan explains whatever happens retroactively, it is entirely useless as a model to explain anything.
gollark: That really just sounds like, er, post-hoc justification which explains literally nothing.
gollark: But you just said you were going to shop A.
gollark: God conveniently acts in ways indistinguishable from random chance.
