"The Fix" is the sixth episode of the first season of the American television drama series Person of Interest. It is the 6th overall episode of the series and is written by Nic Van Zeebroeck & Michael Sopczynski and directed by Dennis Smith. It aired on CBS in the United States and on CTV in Canada on October 27, 2011.

Plot

Reese (Jim Caviezel) takes the case of Zoe Morgan (Paige Turco), a professional fixer who uses her influence and her connections to powerful people to perform favors for her own clients. Zoe has been enlisted to retrieve an incriminating recording of a pharmaceutical executive from a rival company, but comes under threat when she hears the contents of the recording itself and realizes that her employer is just as corrupt as his rival.

Finch (Michael Emerson) finds that Zoe's case is connected to that of Dana Miller, a POI whom he was unable to save before meeting Reese. With the help of Zoe, Reese exposes a corrupt pharmaceutical company and Finch short sells their stock to cause further harm, finally getting justice for someone he was unable to save. Meanwhile, Carter (Taraji P. Henson) takes a homicide case when the murder weapon is proven to be the same one that was used in the "Elias M." case featured in "Mission Creep", and learns that the victim was the murderer of Elias' mother, Marlene Elias, and was killed with the same knife he used to murder Marlene. Carter finds her friend, retired detective Bernie Sullivan (Dan Hedaya), murdered in his apartment by Elias, who flees the scene.

In its original American broadcast, "The Fix" was seen by an estimated 11.62 million household viewers and gained a 2.7/6 ratings share among adults aged 18–49, according to Nielsen Media Research.[1] This was a 7% decrease in viewership from the previous episode, which was watched by 12.42 million viewers with a 2.7/7 in the 18-49 demographics.[2] With these ratings, Person of Interest was the third most watched show on CBS for the night behind Rules of Engagement and The Big Bang Theory, third on its timeslot and fifth for the night in the 18-49 demographics, behind The Office, Rules of Engagement, Grey's Anatomy, The Big Bang Theory, and World Series Game 6.

Critical reviews

"The Fix" received generally positive reviews from critics. Zack Handlen of The A.V. Club gave the episode a "C+" rating and wrote "POI is in the dull spot right now, not so awful as to be entirely unwatchable (provided you don't give it too much of your attention), but not so good as to be anything more than that. I'm not sure how much longer I'll be covering this one. There are only so many kind-of-stretching-it literary references I can make per week."[3]

Keysha Couzens of TV Overmind wrote "First seasons are a learning curve, Person of Interest is clearly trying to find that perfect balance, but it's apparent that there are definitely aspects of the show that just don't pull their weight. Luckily, this show has an abundance of charm and a recent full season pickup to show us what they can really do. It's my hope that all of these recurring threads that have been teased in both the present and in flashbacks are going to pick up and move the story forward into some satisfying surprises and outcomes for the characters and audience to experience. I'm also really looking forward to Mr. Finch going through a virtual National Audubon Society Guidebook of bird-themed aliases (it was a partridge tonight) throughout the rest of the year."[4] Morgan Jeffery of Digital Spy wrote "While not as strong as in recent weeks, 'The Fix' is a relatively entertaining episode of Person of Interest - the show works best when the storyline is action-led and this writer didn't really buy the flirtatious relationship between Zoe and emotional void Reese."[5]

Luke Gelineau of TV Equals wrote "Overall, though this was yet another satisfying episode in what has become my second favorite new drama of the fall (Behind Showtime's Homeland). With an intriguing twist in the M. Elias case happening towards the end of the episode, I'm excited to see where this goes."[6] Sean McKenna of TV Fanatic gave the episode a 4.3 star rating out of 5 and wrote "This was a solid episode that left me confident in CBS' decision for a full season order. With a continuing focus on a tighter story, great character moments, and a dabble of mystery and intrigue throughout, Person of Interest is fitting all the pieces together to create a show truly worth watching."[7]
