History

Its founder Thiru. A. Kulandaivel Mudaliar entered the business in 1962.[3] However its first textile shop was started in Tirupur in 1991 as 'Kumaran silks' with his hard work, later renamed as 'The Chennai Silks' in 2001. They also export clothes for chain stores in USA and Europe including Decathlon, Carrefour, TESCO and Hanes.[4]

Showrooms

The SCM Group[3] also owns 'Sree Kumaran Thangamaligai', a retail jewellery shop across the state.[5] The Chennai Silks has its branches in Ernakulam, Tirupur, Coimbatore (3 Stores), Erode, Chennai, Velachery, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Karur, Kochi, Tirunelveli, Vellore, Salem, Hosur, Viluppuram, Kovilpatti, Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Thoothukudi, Tiruvallur, Chittor, Dindigul, Hyderabad, and Chrompet.

Records

In 2007, done a Guinness world record - THE MOST COSTLIEST SAREE IN THE WORLD[6] which worth about $100,021; £50,679 (WORTH ₹41 LAKHS) and features reproductions of 11 paintings by the celebrated Indian artist Raja Ravi Varma. The main image is a reproduction of Varma's famous 'Galaxy of Musicians'. It take Around 4760 man-hours to complete the design.
