The tournament was introduced in 1996 when a restructuring of the Lincolnshire cricket league introduced a lot of lower teams and 2nd XI teams that were not at the standard to be able to play in The George Marshall Cup which is the main cup competition in the league. The competition is named after Robert Welton, who is the current chairman of the Lincolnshire cricket league and was the person that put the idea of a secondary tournament forward.
The format is a 45 over a side tournament open to all teams and teams outside of the top two leagues that do not want to play in the main cup competition. The main rules are each bowler can only bowl nine overs meaning each team requires five bowlers (only three bowlers minimum are needed in the league) and that players cannot take part if they have played in over half the number of games for their 1st XI team at the time of the tie.[2]
It is unsure if the competition will continue past 2018 with the trail of a 30-over a side competition taking place this year on the advice of the ECB. The 30-over a side competition could be merged into the Bob Welton cup in future years.
