Super Nt

The Analogue Super Nt is an FPGA-based aftermarket Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and Super Famicom (SFC) designed and manufactured by Seattle-based company Analogue, Inc.[1] The Super Nt was designed for Nintendo's 16-bit console era.[2] It is compatible with the original SNES (Both NTSC and PAL region) and SFC game cartridges. It features 1080p HDMI, digital audio (48 kHz 16-bit), and the original SNES/SFC-style controller ports. Kevin Horton engineered Super Nt to run in an Altera Cyclone V with 100% accuracy and also provided extra features like the possibility to scale the original 240p video output to different resolutions up to 1080p 60 Hz. Phil Fish, the designer of Fez, designed the Super Nt's user interface.[3] Squarepusher composed the audio to the system's startup.[4] Unlike previous Analogue products, the Super Nt's enclosure is manufactured from ABS plastic to streamline manufacturing and reduce costs.[5]

Variants

The Super Nt was originally released in four variants: Black, Classic (referencing the North American SNES), SF (referencing the Super Famicom) and Transparent. A limited edition fifth variant in white (in collaboration with Ghostly International and limited to 1000 units) was released on December 3, 2018.[6][7]

Super Turrican - Director's Cut & Super Turrican 2

Super Turrican Director's Cut & the original Super Turrican 2 are included digitally on each Super Nt system. Super Turrican - Director's Cut is an original, untouched version of Super Turrican. In 1993, Factor 5 finished developing the complete Super Turrican for SNES, a 6Mbit title. After the game development had finished, the publisher forced Factor 5 to cut down the game by 33% to 4Mbits. Analogue has stated that the original master files from 1993 are included on Super Nt.[8][9][10][11]

Reception

The Analogue Super Nt was released on February 7, 2018 to critical acclaim. Forbes called it "The new benchmark for all retro consoles".[12] Tom's Guide and PCMag gave it an Editor's Choice Award.[13][14] Wired Magazine gave it a 9/10 and a Wired Recommends Award.[15]
