Super Cup (India)

The AIFF Super Cup or Super Cup, currently known as the Hero AIFF Super Cup for sponsorship reasons, is an annual knockout football tournament in India run by the All India Football Federation (AIFF). It was established as the successor to the Federation Cup. The tournament features the 20 teams that play in the Indian Super League and I-League, the current parallel top division professional football leagues in India respectively.

Not to be confused with Indian Super Cup (1997–2011).

Format

The Super Cup is a knockout football tournament. The top six teams from both the top-tier leagues for professional football in India, the Indian Super League and I-League, qualify directly for the main round of the competition.[1] The bottom five I-League clubs, top seven I-League 2nd Division clubs, bottom four Indian Super League clubs participate in qualification round to complete the 16 teams which participate in the pre-quarter finals.[1]

History

On 19 February 2018, the All India Football Federation announced the creation of the Super Cup as a replacement for the Federation Cup, India's main knockout football tournament.[1] The qualifiers for the inaugural tournament began on 15 March and concluded on 16 March 2018. The tournament proper then commenced on 31 March and concluded with the final on 20 April 2018.[1] Bengaluru emerged as the winners of the inaugural edition of the tournament. They defeated East Bengal 4–1 in the final.[2]

Controversy

In the second edition, seven I-League clubs — Minerva Punjab, East Bengal , Mohun Bagan, NEROCA FC, Gokulam Kerala FC, Aizawl FC, and Chennai City FC — withdrew from the tournament, citing "unfair treatment to I-League clubs by the AIFF"[3] Later, rest but three teams from qualifiers, decided to join the tournament.

Sponsorship and media coverage

The title sponsor for the Super Cup are Hero MotoCorp.[4] With the sponsorship, the competitions official name is the Hero Super Cup.[4] Hero MotoCorp is also the title sponsor for the Indian Super League and I-League, the leagues which comprise the clubs that take part in the Super Cup.[5][6]
