The school has been named 4A School of the Year for Newfoundland and Labrador in each of the last 4 years, as well as 5 of the last 6.

Stephenville High's teams go by the name of Spartans, which was carried over from the former St. Stephen's High.

All courses are classified into one of 9 departments. Art, Music, Special Services, French, Math, Science, English, Social Studies, Skilled Trades and Technology. Each of which has a department office located in the school.
For High School courses, all are given a four digit code. The first number represents level, Level 1 is 1, L2 in 2, L3 is 3. The second digit represents number of credits received for passing the course and the final 2 are for course identification.

Stephenville High School is part of Newfoundland's "Western School District". The district encompasses all of western Newfoundland from Channel-Port aux Basques in the south to St. Anthony in the north and as far east as Francois on the south coast. It also includes all schools in communities along Labrador's south coast. The district includes four other Stephenville schools.
