Sonsonate, El Salvador

Sonsonate is a city and municipality of El Salvador. It is the capital of the department of Sonsonate; on the Sensunapan River and the Pan-American Highway from San Salvador to the Pacific port of Acajutla, 21 km (13 mi) south.[1] Pop. (2007), about 71,541.

Economy

Historically, the area was a producer of cotton.[1] Most of the cotton produced, as of 1850, was retained for local use.[2] Today, tobacco farming, cattle ranching and tourism (volcanos, coral reef) are important industries.
