Shelley Hughes

Shelley Hughes (born January 6, 1958 in Canton, Ohio)[1] is an American politician and a Republican member of the Alaska State Senate, serving since 2017. Hughes was previously a member of the Alaska House of Representatives from January 18, 2013 until January 22, 2017, representing District F.[2]

Education

Hughes earned her AA from Cuyahoga Community College and her BA in English rhetoric from the University of Alaska Anchorage.

Elections

  • 2012 With Democratic Representative David Guttenberg running for the District 8 seat, Hughes won the District 8 August 28, 2012 Republican Primary with 1,813 votes (71.89%),[3] and won the November 6, 2012 General election with 6,183 votes (95.64%) against write-in candidates.[4]
  • Elections for the office of Alaska House of Representatives took place in 2014, however the districts has been changed by the Matanuska-Susitna Borough and the previous seat (8) was updated to District 11. A primary election took place on August 19, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature-filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was June 2, 2014. Pete P. LaFrance was unopposed in the Democratic primary, while District 8 incumbent Shelley Hughes was unopposed in the Republican primary. Hughes defeated LaFrance in the general election for the new District 11 seat with 5,268 (69.8%) of the vote; LaFrance had 2,275 (30.2%) of the vote.[5]
