Sengkurong

Sengkurong is a settlement located in the eastern part of Brunei-Muara District, Brunei. It has two village-level subdivisions, namely Sengkurong 'A' and Sengkurong 'B', which are part of the Sengkurong subdistrict of the Mukims of Brunei.

Geography

Sengkurong is located in Brunei-Muara District, one of the four primary subdivisions of Brunei. It is part of a number settlements along the northeastern and eastern part of the district which make up Sengkurong and Kilanas subdistricts.

Sengkurong is also one of the main settlements along Jalan Tutong, a once primary road from the capital Bandar Seri Begawan to Tutong, and was the main highway between Brunei-Muara and the Tutong Districts, before the Muara–Tutong Highway was built.

Administration

Sengkurong is divided into two areas, Sengkurong 'A' and Sengkurong 'B', and they are designated as villages, the third and lowest-level administrative divisions of Brunei; they are among the subdivisions of the Sengkurong subdistrict (Malay: mukim).[1] Each has its own village head (Malay: ketua kampung) as its community leader, who serves as representative for the local population in the postal-code area.

Economy

Retail business is primary economic activity in Sengkurong and most businesses are spread between the Jalan Tutong and Jalan Jerudong areas. Shophouse buildings are usually set up as large blocks.

Education

The primary and secondary education levels are compulsory for the residents in Sengkurong. The government schools include the Sengkurong Primary School, which provides general primary education, and Sengkurong Religious School[2] which provides Islamic primary education, locally known as Ugama, which is compulsory for the Muslim pupils in the country.[3] In addition, a government school, Sayyidina Husain Secondary School, provides secondary education for the residents of Sengkurong as well as its neighboring settlements.

Religion

Place of Worship

The Sultan Sharif Ali Mosque provides the place of worship for the Muslim residents especially for Jumu'ah or weekly Friday prayers as well as for other Islamic congregational activities. It was inaugurated in 1986 by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.[4] The mosque has a capacity for 3,000 worshippers.[4]
