The Al-Aqrab Prison (The Scorpion) is a notorious torture prison in Egypt. The official name is "Tora Prison 992 Maximum-Security."[1] The prison was built in 1993 under Interior Minister Habib El-Adly. It is located in the city of Helwan, south of Cairo.[2] It is part of the Tora Prison complex.[3]
It has around 320 cells with around 2000 inmates. Former inmates report torture with sticks, cables, electric shock, and rape.[4] Opponents of the regime are imprisoned there.[5]
