Santiago Ascacíbar

Santiago Ascacíbar (born 25 February 1997) is an Argentine professional footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder for Hertha BSC and the Argentina national football team.[1]

Club career

On 22 August 2017, Ascacíbar signed a five-year-deal with VfB Stuttgart.[2][3][4] In August 2018, Ascacíbar extended his contract with Stuttgart until June 2023.[5]

Ascacibar's excellent performances for Stuttgart attracted interest from many clubs. Hertha Berlin were the most interested and they put forward a lucrative bid to buy Ascacibar. On 1 January 2020, Ascacíbar signed a long-term contract with Hertha BSC.[6] Many of Europe's elite clubs have shown serious interest in buying Ascacibar. Among the clubs that have shown interest in the Argentine are Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Manchester United.[7][8][9]

International career

He represented Argentina in the football competition at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He made his senior international debut for Argentina on 8 September 2018 in a 3–0 international friendly against the Guatemala national football team.[10] With the U20 team, Argentina finished in 4th place at the 2017 South American Youth Championship, thus qualifying to the 2017 U20 FIFA World Cup. As the case at the Olympics which was held a year prior, Argentina did not make it past the group stage. Ascacibar was due to play for the Argentina football team at the 2020 Olympics, but the Olympics was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Argentina's most-capped player Javier Mascherano has described Ascacibar as a great player and he predicted that Ascacibar will be a very important player for the Argentina national team for years to come.[11] In fact, many pundits in Argentina see Ascacibar as the heir apparent defensive midfielder to Mascherano in the Argentina team.
