In acting, Pansino has appeared throughout many television series, including Parks and Recreation and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. She has also appeared in the animated YouTube series Broken Quest, as well as starring in the YouTube Premium series Escape the Night, appearing in main roles on both shows.[3] She has written and published two cookbooks, and has released her own baking line in cooperation with the cooking company Wilton. In 2015, Pansino released the single "Perfect Together", in which she made her official singing debut.[4]

Early life

Pansino was born in Seattle, Washington where she was raised alongside her sister Molly.[5] Her interest in cooking was inspired by her grandmother.[6] Throughout her childhood, she was known by friends and family as a "nerdy" and "awkward" kid.[7] Pansino originally wanted to pursue acting.[8] After attending Pacific Lutheran University, she moved to Los Angeles, California.[7] In school, Pansino struggled with dyslexia.[9]

Pansino is of Italian, Croatian, German, and Irish ancestry.[10]

Career

Pansino made her first appearance on television as a contestant on Season 2 of VH1's Scream Queens, a reality series in which the prize was a role in one of the Saw films. She ended in 9th place. Following this, Pansino pursued her career as an actress,[8] appearing in small roles on shows such as Parks and Recreation and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.[8]

She began her YouTube channel after she was encouraged by a few of her professional friends who had also worked on YouTube, and had started making videos to get more comfortable in front of a camera.[8] Her baking show started after she filmed the process of making themed treats at a party, which promptly received momentum. Her early baking videos gained a steady following, and viewers eventually started to request more.[11] Because she had never seen a baking show on television or the Internet, Pansino decided to create the Nerdy Nummies series. She later revealed that in her early years of YouTube while she had still worked as an actress, that she eventually had to choose between acting or YouTube, the ultimatum given by her agent.[8] She remained adamant that she would not quit YouTube, despite the risks being taken at the time.[12] Pansino told Cosmopolitan in 2015: " At this point, I wasn't making any money on YouTube. I knew that it was possible to do that but I wasn't making a dime. I decided, I'm going to do this. I'm not going to let YouTube go. My agent's going to drop me. And he did. That's when I totally invested 100 percent of my time and my life savings into my channel. I worked on my channel full-time for a year before I started to make money. I just had to live off my savings. I lived in a really small apartment with, like, six people and three bedrooms."

Nerdy Nummies became an instant hit, rising as one of the most credible and popular baking shows on YouTube. and brought Pansino much credibility and fame. The show has been nominated for four Streamy Awards. The show has featured popular YouTube personalities such as Michelle Phan, Bethany Mota, Lindsey Stirling, Grace Helbig, Rhett and Link from Good Mythical Morning, Smosh, Hannah Hart, Cassey Ho, iJustine, Jordan Maron (CaptainSparklez), Colleen Ballinger, Markiplier, MatPat, Kaelem, Alx James, Random Encounters, Lilly Singh, Phil Lester, Dan Howell, Strawburry17, Joey Graceffa, Shane Dawson, Jimmy Wong, Freddie Wong, ParkerGames, Miss Piggy and Swedish Chef from Muppets Most Wanted, Cookie Monster from Sesame Street, video game creator Shigeru Miyamoto, astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson, movie actress Madison Iseman and YouTube scientist Grant Thompson. Nerdy Nummies mostly features baking creations resembling characters and objects from video games, television shows, anime/manga, books, and films.

Pansino returned to acting in 2013, starring as the main role of Violet in the animated YouTube series Broken Quest.[3] She appeared in the comedy-horror film Bloodsucka Jones in the same year, which ultimately turned to be a disappointment at the box-office. In 2015, she made a cameo in the music video for "Dessert" by Dawin ft Silento. In 2016, she appeared in a recurring voice role for the television series Emo Dad, and also guest starred in the Disney Channel series Bizaardvark as herself. She starred in the third season of YouTube Red's Escape the Night as The Jet Setter in 2018, and in the fourth season as The Socialite in 2019. The cast of the third and fourth season were nominated for Streamy Awards for best ensemble, of which they won none.[13][14]

In 2015, Pansino released her first single, entitled "Perfect Together", making her official debut as a musical artist. The song was produced by Kurt Hugo Schneider,[15] and initially released on iTunes, with the music video being released later the same year.[16] The song gained much popularity on her channel, and as of 2019, has over 20 million views.[4] Pansino has taken part in other music projects following.

In 2015, Pansino wrote and published The Nerdy Nummies Cookbook,[17][18] which was officially released that same year.[19] The book includes selected recipes previously featured on Nerdy Nummies, along with previously featured recipes have been remastered. Part of the book consists of new recipes that have never been featured on the show.[20] The book is divided into six chapters and has template barcodes and step-by-step pictures to guide certain recipes.[21] The book became a New York Times best seller,[22] and has been listed by BookRiot on a list of "50 Must-Read Books by YouTubers".[23] In 2018, Pansino released another cookbook, entitled Baking All Year Round, which was based on the same concept of her previous cookbook.[24]

In August 2017,[25] Pansino released a baking line in collaboration with cooking company Wilton.[26] The set ranges from cooking tools and products intended more for the use of beginners, with the items including measurements and guides on each. It was released to a massive number of retailers, including Walmart and Michael's.[26] In 2018, she released new items to further extend her line.[27]

In 2019, she made an appearance as a guest judge on Netflix original competitive-baking show Nailed It!.[28]

Personal life

Pansino currently resides in Los Angeles, where she films all her YouTube videos.[7]

In 2018, Pansino announced that she is in a relationship with Mike Lamond, better known as Husky, a former esports commentator who currently works with Pansino on Nerdy Nummies. Then later in Pansino's 2019 Valentine's Day video, "OUR LOVE STORY! Valentine’s Day Mukbang w/ My Boyfriend!", she states that they've worked together for nine years and have been dating for six years.[29]

In 2019, Pansino was admitted to a local hospital after complaining of suffering severe pain and illness.[30] It was then later revealed that she'd caught a life-threatening bacterial infection, which was treated immediately.[31] The news was announced on her Twitter account.[32]

On December 17, 2019, Pansino announced throughout her social media outlets that her father, who appeared in several of her videos, had died due to leukemia, which he had been fighting for six years.[33][34]
