Having defeated the Hakugei (白鯨, "White Whale") after its 400 year reign of terror, the alliance returns to Crusch's manor with the severed head of the mabeast in tow. Subaru rides in a cart with Emilia and the village children, when he discovers to his horror that he is the only one who can remember Rem. Skipping back to a little earlier in time, we see that Rem, riding ahead in an advance guard with Crusch encounters an ambush that destroys the carts ahead of them. As they see a lone man standing in the road, Crusch orders the cart to charge ahead. Rem, sensing deadly danger, leaps from the cart with Crusch just before it is also explosively destroyed like the others, along with some of Crusch's retainers. Crusch attempts to confront the talkative but unknown person, who is offended by Crusch's hostility and she is disarmed effortlessly. From behind, a second, strange attacker appears to flank Rem. Rem applies first aid to the gravely wounded Crusch, and takes up arms in her defense until the rest of the caravan can arrive. The strange man identifies himself as the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony, Lye Batenkaitos, and the man in the road identifies himself as the Sin Archibishop of Greed, Regulus Corneus. Rem fights fiercely but is defeated, and her name and memories are consumed by the Authority of Gluttony. Later in the evening, Subaru and Emilia arrive at Crusch's manor and see the numerous casualties being treated by healers. Subaru is shocked to see a wounded Crusch in critical condition, and in a panic searches for Rem. After making a futile appeal to the medic attending her, Subaru takes drastic action in an attempt to prevent the ambush, but it does not work as he returns to the cart, after the ambush has occurred, as confirmed by Emilia's lack of knowledge of Rem. Realizing that he cannot go back to save Rem, a despondent Subaru sits by her bedside in a room in the manor. Puck appears and informs Subaru about the Authority of Gluttony and its ability to eat peoples' names and memories, and how it has turned Rem into an empty shell. Before leaving, Puck asks Subaru to take care of Emilia. Afterwards in the hall, Subaru encounters a partially-amnesiac Crusch, who brings him to a meeting in the parlor. At the meeting, Subaru, Emilia, Crusch, Felis and Wilhelm van Astrea sit down to decide what to do next. After heated and emotional discussion, Crusch decides to remain unified with Emilia against the new threat. Emilia concludes the meeting by suggesting that they regroup with their allies, Roswaal L. Mathers and Ram. Back in Rem's room, Emilia finds and comforts Subaru, who tearfully resolves to save Rem from her fate.

Crusch sees off Subaru, Emilia, Otto and the Irlam Village evacuees in the morning, as they return to the Roswaal's manor in order to consult with him. Felis has finished preparing Rem to be transported in the carriage, which is being drawn with the help of Subaru's land dragon Patrasche. Subaru and Emilia share a moment in the carriage during the peaceful ride. Stopping at Irlam Village to drop off the evacuees, the group discovers that no one else has returned, and Emilia speculates that they may still be in the Sanctuary. Subaru and Emilia come to the realization that neither of them actually knows where the Sanctuary is, as they were in a hurry to escape the Witch Cult's attack, so they head to the manor to find answers. Upon arriving at the Roswaal's mansion, Emilia mentions that Puck is still not answering her calls. Upon knocking on the front door, they are unexpectedly greeted by one of the mansion's former maids, Frederica Baumann, who has returned to assist in the caretaking of the manor at Ram's request. Gathered in the parlor, Frederica fills in Emilia as to the current state of affairs, which she herself discovered via a letter she found in Roswaal's study. The group acknowledges that although they have more information, they still need to find Roswaal himself in order to properly plan their next steps; Frederica recommends the next immediate option: to consult with the guardian of the library, Beatrice. Subaru, who seems to be able to easily locate the constantly-moving entrance to the library, barges in on Beatrice, who greets him as coldly as ever. After chatting for a bit, during which time Subaru mentions several things that alarm Beatrice (and one thing in particular that makes her wistful), Beatrice shuts Subaru out and tells him to go to the Sanctuary for the answers he needs and that Frederica can show him how to get there. Regrouping in the parlor, Emilia's faction decides that they'll have to risk going to the Sanctuary, although Frederica will not accompany them herself for reasons she can't fully say. She does ask for two days' time to prepare for the journey, however, before briefing the group on the route to get to the Sanctuary and the need for caution regarding a being called "Garfiel." Two days later, Subaru bids farewell to the still-in-stasis Rem, and encounters village girl Petra, who has come to the mansion answering Frederica's call for a junior maid to assist her in her daily duties. Frederica hands Emilia a talisman that is meant to unlock the barrier to the Sanctuary, and she and Petra bid the group farewell. On the journey, Subaru and Emilia talk and he learns that Puck is still not answering Emilia's call, leading him to wonder if Puck knew that he might not be there to help them in the immediate future. Suddenly, the barrier unlocking talisman flares with light, causing Subaru to grab it off Emilia's neck. He intends to throw it out of the carriage, but his hand is stayed when Emilia passes out. He is then seemingly transported somewhere else in the forest, alone. A robed person with pointed ears appears behind Subaru, and wordlessly runs away from him; he gives chase until he loses sight of the person, stopping at an overgrown, seemingly abandoned building. With no other clues, he proceeds into the darkness of the unlit structure, when a disembodied voice makes a comment about Subaru. Subaru is once again transported, this time to an endless plain under bright, blue sky. Behind him, someone sits at an umbrella-shaded cafe table set for tea. The silver-haired being introduces themself as Echidna, the Witch of Greed.

Subaru has unexpectedly come face to face with Echidna, the Witch of Greed. She confirms that she hasn't moved Subaru in physical space, hinting that they are actually in a psychic space. At her invitation, Subaru joins her tea party, but doesn't sit down and instead boldly gulps down his tea in one go, much to her amazement. Echidna and Subaru verbally spar with each other, with Echidna probing Subaru for her own curiosity; during the conversation Echidna dismisses the illusion of physical space as she hints at the vast amount of arcane and eldritch knowledge she has, especially regarding the Witch of Envy, which Subaru's mind reacts to in fear and shock. His reaction causes them to fall back into the tea party illusion. Subaru then has a strong reaction to something that was in the tea he drank: Sloth Witch Factor, which Echidna says will extend the amount of time that Subaru can spend in the psychic space. Echidna admits that she finds Subaru fascinating, and reveals that the reason they even met is because the Sloth Witch Factor has chosen him since he defeated the Sin Archbishop of Sloth, and that it allows Subaru to be in her presence without his mind breaking. Subaru questions Echidna further, learning that her soul is trapped in this place, which she refers to as the Witch's Graveyard and as "the Sanctuary." Upon learning that he has in fact arrived at the Sanctuary, Subaru holds to his mission to meet up with Roswaal and Ram, and declines any further audience with Echidna, much to her disappointment. Before returning Subaru to the world, Echidna takes her "payment" which is to prohibit him from talking about what happened at her tea party. She also grants Subaru the right to participate in the trial of the Sanctuary, the significance of which he will understand later, and which she is greatly looking forward to. Returning to the real world, Subaru rises from where he collapsed in a passageway, and follows it outside to the light. There, he is confronted by Garfiel Tinsel, guardian of the Sanctuary, who attacks them until Subaru desperately name-drops Frederica. After negotiating a truce, Garfiel agrees to escort the group to meet with Ram and Roswaal. During the ride, the group learns that they are already inside the Sanctuary, which is bordered by a barrier that causes demi-humans to fall asleep, and that it's not really a sanctuary. Dismounting the carriage in a run-down village, the group is greeted by Ram, who needles Subaru as usual, greets Emilia cordially and cooly orders Garfiel around. With Garfiel leading Otto and the carriage away, Subaru is faced with having to talk to Ram. For her part, Ram tries to reassure them that the villagers that came to the Sanctuary are safe, and that she is fine. An uncomfortable silence falls as Subaru struggles to bring up Rem's fate, but Emilia intervenes and pushes off the subject for now, as they go inside the cottage to where Roswaal is. Once inside, they discover an injured but otherwise talkative Roswaal. Sharing information, Roswaal reveals that his family has a long history with the Sanctuary and with the Witch of Greed, whom he insists on referring to as Echidna. They learn that the reason no one has returned to Irlam Village or to the Roswaal mansion is because all demihumans are trapped there by the barrier, including Emilia. Garfiel enters, confirms this, also mentioning that the only way to dispel the barrier is to pass the trial of the Sanctuary, and that only demihumans can attempt the trial, which is why Roswaal was injured. Garfiel explicitly states that the demihumans are holding the villagers hostage until Emilia, a half-elf, can pass the trial, dispel the barrier and free them all. Subaru goes to check on the villagers, and let them know that their counterparts are safe back at home. He also announces that they have a plan to free everyone, and presents Emilia to the villagers as their champion in the trial. Emilia humbly asks for their support, and the village elder, Milde, speaks on their behalf. As Emilia and the villagers come to an understanding, they wholeheartedly back Emilia. Later that evening, Emilia gathers her power and enters the trial, cheered on by Subaru. Moments later, however, something seems to go wrong and Subaru rushes in headlong. Having been previously approved to undergo the trial by Echidna, Subaru enters the ruin, discovers Emilia passed out on the floor in a room inside, and hears a voice in his head saying that he must confront his past. Subaru falls into unconsciousness, and inexplicably awakens in his own bed back in Japan. Suddenly, a shirtless man appears and executes a diving splash onto Subaru: his father, Kenichi Natuski.
