Plot
In 1861, Kadambini Basu was born to the Brahmo social reformer Brojokishore Basu, in Bhagalpur province of Bihar in British India. Kadambini grows up under the tutelage of her father, who envisioned a bright future for the spirited Bini. She is encouraged to question the superstitions prevalent in society and seek scientific base as well as be the torch bearer to bring about a change in the society by receiving higher education. Her mother, Kanak Devi, a strong willed woman is opposed to her education, as in those days educated women would not get married easily.
Few years later
Bini continues her education in Bhagalpur, disregarding the harsh comments from society. Brojokishore realizes that further education would not be possible in Bhagalpur and writes to Bini's elder cousin in Kolkata, barrister Monomohun Ghose. Ghose is one of the pillars of a school that is being envisioned for higher education of women in Kolkata by the fiesty social reformer, teacher and journalist Dwarkanath Ganguly and his friend lawyer Durgamohan Das under the guidance of British educationist Miss Annette Ackroyd. Dwarkanath, publisher of the women's magazine 'Abalabandhab', has to undergo lot of humiliation and hurdles to build the first hostel school for girls.
Monomohun Ghose persuades Brojokishore Babu to let Bini to come to Kolkata and get enrolled in the school of Dwarkanath. The narrative moves in parallel tracks where Dwarkanath is shown to face different obstacles in opening the school, while Bini after arriving in Kolkata to enroll in the school, is shown to have spirited intelligence and a keen observation power. Bini's journey to become the first female doctor is cemented by her various experiences of seeing women suffer but not get treated by male doctors.
