The album had been confirmed in December 2017 by SM and was completed prior to Jonghyun's death, of which it was announced a day after.[2] Upon release, the album debuted at number 177 on the US Billboard 200, the album being his first to chart on the list.[3][4]
Background
S.M. Entertainment confirmed in early December 2017 that Jonghyun would return with a solo album in January 2018. At Jonghyun's Inspired concerts, which took place on December 9 and 10, 2017, his teleprompter included an announcement for his January 2018 solo comeback, but he had ignored it at the time.[5]
The album and promotional music video for the title track "Shinin" had been completed before Jonghyun's death on December 18, 2017.[1][6] On January 19, 2018, S.M. announced the title of the album and the release date.[7]
Promotion
Songs were teased during Inspired, where he performed "Take the Dive", "I'm So Curious", "Only One You Need", the latter of which was about comforting others after the loss of a loved one.[8] "#Hashtag" was featured in a concert intermission video, while "Rewind" appeared in an intermission video from the concert The Agit: Letter.[9]
Singles
"Shinin'" and its respective music video were released on January 23, 2018.[10] The music video for "Before Our Spring" was released the following day on January 24.
Release
On January 19, S.M. confirmed Poet | Artist and its posthumous release on January 23.[7] All album proceeds will be going to Jonghyun's mother to create a foundation for people living under difficult circumstances.[11]
Commercial performance
The album sold 5,000 album-equivalent units in the United States on its first week of release and debuted at number 177 on the Billboard 200, making this Jonghyun's first album to debut and chart on the list.[3][4] In Japan, imports of the album debuted at number 12 of the Oricon Weekly Albums chart, with 6,089 copies sold.[12] The following week, it went to number ten with 6,782 copies.[13]
Reception
"#Hashtag" received media attention for discussing gossip and slanderous comments on the Internet and was praised for both lyrical content and Jonghyun's use of wordplay.[14]
Shortly after the album's release, KBS banned "Rewind" from its radio stations for containing lyrics in Japanese.[9]
