Plot

The movie starts with the death of a man Anand Sharma (Subodh Bhave) in a hotel room. Then the movie changes focus to the story of Purushothaman Nair (Dileep). Nair is a B.Com Graduate who has been unemployed for the past 8 years. He lives with his wife Devi (Kavya Madhavan), daughter Revathi (Akshara Kishor), father-in-law Pappu Pillai (Nedumudi Venu) and his sickly brother-in-law Kuttan (Indrans) in Pillai's house. He enjoys reading detective novels when free. While waiting for a job, he finally lands one in the gulf. From then people's attitude towards him changes. He is more respected in his village. He doesn't hesitate helping people who come to him. In his greed to make more money he devices a plan to fake his death to get the insurance money. He, along with his father-in-law and Devi's uncle (Vijayaraghavan), decide to place a dead body in his car and burn it to make it seem as though the Nair burned along with the car. But when they couldn't secure a body, they decide to kill a man and use his body. While driving at night, they find a man asking for a lift to the hospital as he was having his first child. Devi's uncle strangles the man to death and all three of them place him in the driver's seat and proceed to burn the car. Everyone (except Devi whom Nair had told the whole plan to) considers Nair dead, while Nair disappears. Soon through forensic reports, it is proved that the man killed in the car was not Nair but some unidentified person. Police arrest Kuttan, Pillai and Devi's Uncle for questioning where Kuttan is thrashed. The other two surrender to the police saying that the man was killed by accident and by the fear of authorities lead them burn his body along with the car. 17 years pass and it is revealed that Kuttan is bed-ridden due to the thrashing, Pillai refuses to see anyone in jail, Devi's uncle passed away in jail while Nair is still missing. One night, a man (Subodh Bhave) comes at Devi's window calling out to her. When he sees that she is frightened, he lays out the truth that he is Nair who had undergone a plastic surgery to escape from the authorities (whose present identity is of Anand Sharma). Frightened and not believing him, Devi threatens to call the police which makes him leave. He returns for a few nights where Devi accepts that he is her husband. But, she refuses to come with him to lead a new life claiming he destroyed her and her family's life and doesn't want to see him. He returns the following night and tells her that he will not come into her life again and leaves. The movie ends when it shifts to the present where the police find a suicide note under Sharma's bed in the hotel room in which he had written, "I have one request. Do not go in search of who I am. I, myself, do not know who I am", leaving everyone puzzled.
