Persona Non Grata (2015 film)

Persona Non Grata (杉原千畝 スギハラチウネ, Sugihara Chiune) is a 2015 Japanese biographical drama film directed by Cellin Gluck. It depicts the life of Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara who was appointed a vice-consul and later a consul in Lithuania and served there from 1939 to 1940 and who saved lives of some 6,000 Jewish refugees by issuing transit visas to the Japanese Empire.

Even though most of the film is set in Interwar Lithuania, various places in Poland were chosen for filming.

Plot

Chiune Sugihara (Toshiaki Karasawa) is a Japanese diplomat working in Lithuania. During World War II, with the help of Dutch diplomat Jan Zwartendijk, he attempts to save many Jews from Nazi Germany by issuing transit visas to Japan. The film depicts Sugihara's life from the period when he was a student in Waseda University.

Release

The North American premiere was part of the 2016 Atlanta Jewish Film Festival (AJFF) with five screenings, one each at five of the festival venues. The first screening was 31 January 2016 at SCADshow.[3]

Reception

The film grossed US$1.2 million on its opening weekend in Japan.[4]

gollark: I've seen something which let you define processing chains as Lua scripts, which might be nicer than a graphical UI.
gollark: And I found out the computers all have keyloggers by typing a bunch of suspicious keywords into notepad (and not saving that). They complained that I had apparently wasted a bunch of time by doing so.

gollark: Also, they use Raspberry Pis for some programming education, but connecting to the package repositories they need for updates is blocked by the filtering proxy.
gollark: Sometimes they fail to PXE-boot or something like that and are just stuck displaying a black screen with some error messages on it.
