Padma Kuppa

Padma Kuppa, a Democrat, is a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from the 41st district,[1] which includes the city of Troy.[2] Kuppa is an Indian-American.[3] She is the first Indian immigrant and Hindu in the Michigan Legislature.[4] She has been named Assistant Whip in Michigan.[5][6] Kuppa is currently President of the Troy Historical Society and a board member of the Michigan Round-table for Diversity and Inclusion.[4]

Career

Kuppa is a former engineer for Chrysler Corp. and the city of Troy.[7] She worked as Troy's Planning Commissioner for more than two years.[8] Padma Kuppa (D) defeated Doug Tietz (R) in the general election for Michigan House of Representatives District 41 on November 6, 2018.[9] Kuppa serves on the Energy Committee and the Local Government & Municipal Finance Committee.[10] She is a founder of the Troy-area Interfaith Group.[11]

Education

Kuppa earned her bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Warangal in India, and moved to the United States for Graduate School.

Early-Life

Born in India, Kuppa arrived in the United States, when she was 4 years old, to start kindergarten in 1970 on Long Island. Kuppa returned to India with her family in 1981, where she finished high school and undergraduate school.[11] Padma Kuppa returned to New York in 1988 as a graduate student.[11] Kuppa, her husband, and their two children have made Troy, Michigan their home since 1998.
