Ozone Atom

The Ozone Atom is a French single-place paraglider that was designed by hang gliding and paragliding world champion pilot Robbie Whittall and produced by Ozone Gliders of Le Bar-sur-Loup. It remained in production as the Ozone 3 in 2016.[1]

Design and development

The aircraft was designed as a beginner glider for school use in flight training and replaced the Ozone Element in production in that role.[1][2]

The design has progressed through three generations of models, the Atom, Atom 2 and 3, each improving on the last. The models are each named for their relative size.[1]

Operational history

Reviewer Noel Bertrand described the Ozone series of gliders in a 2003 review as, "wings that are both pleasant to fly and high performance in their respective categories".[1]

Atom S
Small-sized model for lighter pilots. Its 11.10 m (36.4 ft) span wing has a wing area of 25.37 m2 (273.1 sq ft), 33 cells and the aspect ratio is 4.86:1. The pilot weight range is 60 to 85 kg (132 to 187 lb). The glider model is DHV 1 certified.[1]
Atom M
Mid-sized model for medium-weight pilots. Its 11.57 m (38.0 ft) span wing has a wing area of 27.52 m2 (296.2 sq ft), 33 cells and the aspect ratio is 4.86:1. The pilot weight range is 80 to 100 kg (176 to 220 lb). The glider model is DHV 1 certified.[1]
Atom L
Large-sized model for heavier pilots. Its 12.03 m (39.5 ft) span wing has a wing area of 29.76 m2 (320.3 sq ft), 33 cells and the aspect ratio is 4.86:1. The pilot weight range is 95 to 120 kg (209 to 265 lb). The glider model is DHV 1 certified.[1]

Atom 3

Atom 3 XXS
Very small-sized model for very light pilots. Its 9.25 m (30.3 ft) span wing has a wing area of 20.0 m2 (215 sq ft), 31 cells and the aspect ratio is 4.26:1. The glider weight is 3.88 kg (9 lb) and take-off weight range is 49 to 70 kg (108 to 154 lb). The glider model is EN-A certified.[3]
Atom 3 XS
Extra small-sized model for very light pilots. Its 9.7 m (31.8 ft) span wing has a wing area of 22.0 m2 (237 sq ft), 31 cells and the aspect ratio is 4.26:1. The glider weight is 4.17 kg (9 lb) and take-off weight range is 55 to 75 kg (121 to 165 lb). The glider model is EN-A certified.[3]
Atom 3 S
Small-sized model for light pilots. Its 10.13 m (33.2 ft) span wing has a wing area of 24.1 m2 (259 sq ft), 31 cells and the aspect ratio is 4.26:1. The glider weight is 4.45 kg (10 lb) and take-off weight range is 65 to 90 kg (143 to 198 lb). The glider model is EN-A certified.[3]
Atom 3 M
Medium-sized model for mid-weight pilots. Its 10.54 m (34.6 ft) span wing has a wing area of 26.1 m2 (281 sq ft), 31 cells and the aspect ratio is 4.26:1. The glider weight is 4.76 kg (10 lb) and take-off weight range is 75 to 105 kg (165 to 231 lb). The glider model is EN-A certified.[3]
Atom 3 L
Large-sized model for heavier pilots. Its 11.21 m (36.8 ft) span wing has a wing area of 29.5 m2 (318 sq ft), 31 cells and the aspect ratio is 4.26:1. The glider weight is 5.2 kg (11 lb) and take-off weight range is 95 to 125 kg (209 to 276 lb). The glider model is EN-A certified.[3]
