Oliver (software)

Oliver is an English-speaking Vocaloid by PowerFX who was released for Vocaloid 3. He was the first English Vocaloid to gain a large amount of popularity, owed mostly to his usage in the show Bee and PuppyCat as featured on the Cartoon Hangover YouTube channel.

Development

Oliver's production began a year before his release; his voice was recorded by a (then) 13-year-old British boy. He was recorded at a London studio.[1] According to an interview in 2013, the boy selected for the role of OLIVER's voice was able to concentrate better than some of the adults they had used in the past. The boy was chosen from a children's choir; the choir leader was known by a friend of Anders and was asked for suitable candidates. OLIVER's provider was chosen for his ability to read the English script clearly and maintain maturity despite the young age.[2]

Characteristics

Oliver was introduced to Vocaloid fans via forums and information was passed freely. The feedback and reactions were better received overall than the past with other vocals, making this approach one of the companies' most successful marketing attempts on any vocals. According to Anders', OLIVER was easy to market, but they wanted to avoid making him "too cute".[2]

Like Sweet Ann and Big Al, he is based on a Frankenstein's monster.

gollark: The ability for lasers to lase other lasers, I mean.
gollark: Anti-laser lasers would be quite a fun feature to add to plethora.
gollark: Most of my laser-using programs just go for the simple but naive solution of firing toward the current position of whatever's being targeted.
gollark: Huh. That is much more advanced than my brief attempt at improved laser targeting, which just got the target's current position, figured out how long it would take for the laser to reach that, then added that times its velocity to the target position.
gollark: Sadly, for cost and claims-weirdness reasons they are no longer deployed in Keansia.
