The October Gallery has shown international artists including El Anatsui,[2] Rachid Koraïchi, Romuald Hazoumè,[3] Nnenna Okore, Laila Shawa and Kenji Yoshida. The Gallery promotes the Transvangarde movement, as well as maintaining a cultural hub in central London for poets, writers, intellectuals and artists, hosting talks, performances and seminars.
Institutions to have collected works from October Gallery include the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf, Germany; Neue Galerie, Kassel, Germany; Setagagya Art Museum, Tokyo, Japan.
History
Founded in 1979, October Gallery is a charitable trust that is supported by sales of art, rental of the Gallery's facilities, grants from various funding bodies and the active support of dedicated artists, musicians, writers and others..
From its beginnings, the October Gallery has promoted the art and artists of the Transvangarde or trans-cultural avant-garde. Since then, the October Gallery has exhibited the work of artists from more than 65 different countries, and from regions that include Africa,[4] Asia, Australia, the Americas,[5] Europe, the Middle East, India and Oceania.[1]
Recent shows have featured work by such artists as El Anatsui,[6] James Barnor,[7] Sokari Douglas Camp,[8] Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga,[9][10] Naomi Gakunga[11] and Alexis Peskine.[12]
