Nancy (singer)

Nancy Jewel McDonie (born April 13, 2000), known professionally as Nancy (Korean: 낸시), is a Korean-American singer, actress, host, and a member of the girl group Momoland, which was formed in November 10, 2016 through the Mnet's reality survival show Finding Momoland.

Early life and education

Nancy was born to a Korean mother and an American father of Irish ancestry.

She graduated from Hanlim Multi Art School on February 9, 2018, where she was a student in the Musical Department[1][2].

Personal life

Nancy has been living in the United States for about 6 years. In a interview about her being mixed with two different cultures Nancy said, "i have always been told by my parents that there are two cultures that I am in contact with even since i was a child."[3][4]

When asked if she was afraid or was unfamiliar with Korean culture when she moved to South Korea, she said: "Before I moved to South Korea, my mother kept telling me that Korean and American schools are really different." She added, "After I transferred to a Korean school, I couldn't speak Korean well, but it was not difficult because my friends helped me."[3]

Career

Pre-debut

Nancy auditioned in Korea's Got Talent as part of a hip-hop group called "Cutie Pies" in 2011, The group reached the semi-finals.[5] She was a former trainee of Nega Network.

She appeared in a various TV programs in her teens, such as The Unlimited Show where she had visited Philippines and Saipan, along with South Korean actress Kim Yoo-jung.

Nancy also appeared in music videos such as Snuper’s "Stand By Me" and MC Gree’s "Dangerous".

2016: Finding Momoland, debut with Momoland, and Sunny Girls

In 2016, Nancy became a contestant on Mnet's reality survival show Finding Momoland to select the members of MLD Entertainment's new girl group Momoland. She finished the competition in second place, and had her debut with the group on November 10, 2016 with the mini-album Welcome To Momoland.[6] Momoland made their debut stage performing at M Countdown,[7]

On November 19, it was announced that she would join Inkigayo's project girl group Sunny Girls[8] along with GFriend's Eunha, WJSN's Cheng Xiao, Oh My Girl's YooA and Gugudan's Nayoung.[9][10]

2017–present: Acting activities and Success with Momoland

In 2017, Nancy has a Guest appearance in tvN's TV series The Liar and His Lover[11],

On April 2017, Momoland released the single "Wonderful Love", On August 22, 2017, Momoland's second mini-album, Freeze! Was released, in the same year, Nancy was cast in the lead role with boy band ZE:A's member Ha Min-woo in Naver TV's web music drama series, Some Light,[12] Nancy and Ha Min-woo also collaborated together for the theme song of the drama series[13],

in 2018 Nancy has a Guest appearance in MBC's Dae Jang Geum is Watching,[14]

On January 3, 2018, momoland released their third mini-album, Great! with the its lead single "Bboom Bboom", the lead single "Bboom Bboom" become a Commercial Success, it peaked at number two on the Gaon Digital Chart,[15] On June 26, 2018, Momoland released their fourth mini-album Fun to the World, with the lead single "Baam", the lead single was 15th best-selling song of July 2018 on Gaon Music Chart [16].

On October 4, 2019, Dreamscape Entertainment, who is the production company of the show, announced that Nancy will be starring as the female lead in an upcoming new Filipino drama series, titled The Soulmate Project, alongside Filipino-Australian actor, James Reid, consists of 13 episodes, Nancy revealed that her character, Binna, is a "Korean-American who lives in the Philippines". Nancy also revealed that the filming will also takes part in her home country South Korea[17].the drama was originally set to air in 2020.[18], But it was later postponed to air in 2021 due to the Covid-19 and ABS-CBN franchise renewal controversy[19][20].
