Until recently, only a single specimen from this family was known. This individual had been caught off Saint Helena in 1868. In the 1990s and 2000s, deep-sea submersibles identified several more individuals, including four further species.[2] The first known species, M. compressus, was bright red in colour, but not all other species share this trait.

Species

The currently recognized species in this genus are:[3]

gollark: It would be cool if it was able to gather more data from users to more accurately imitate them.
gollark: This is a weird thing to cause significantly increased faith in humanity.
gollark: I mostly started today. School, that is.
gollark: Yes, how dare people post things which vaguely imply something something drugs?
gollark: I only have some bismuth on my desk, because it looks shiny. Also lots of random electronics, a TIS-100 manual, and a bowl.
