Inspired by funk music and disco, the song and its video pay tribute to 1960s film classics and disco artists such as Donna Summer. The track was written by Day and produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, and marks Day's second release under Easy Eye Sound and Concord Records.

Background and composition

The song was produced by Dan Auerbach and written by Auerbach, Day, and Bobby Wood.[3] Like the rest of Day's EP, Where Does the Devil Hide, "My Game" was recorded live and during the 4-day-long session that the EP was recorded. When describing the song, Day called it a hybrid of "Donna Summer, 9 1/2 Weeks, and the first ever Casino Royale."

Music video

The music video for the song was released on May 29, 2020. Directed by Phillip Lopez, the video was edited by Day's frequent collaborator, Gianennio Salucci and starred Day alongside Alejandro Lara with featured performers including Day's sister Mia Rae and models Yana Yatsuk, Allie Buckley, Stephanie Kim and Jessica Gadzinski.[4]

The video starts with Day in a red-colored room with her dancers in matching attire as she investigates photos on the wall for clues. The video then cuts away to show Day's dancers in disguise dancing "on their tip toes" to appear lofty sneaky as further scenes show Day singing to a mysterious audience in an evening gown and later in a getaway car as she embarks on a high speed chase. Day called the video a "feverish time travel into every dimension where the hustle is on the floor," adding how "it’s a disco game board with a pair of cherry red dice rolling in my favor. I’m climbing up onto the table in my glitter platforms and I’m calling the shots."[5]

Promotion and release

American photographer Neil Krug assisted Day with visuals for the EP, including the cover artwork for the songs and the video for its first single "People Are Strangers".[6] Since its release, Day has only been able to perform the song once due to the restrictions put in place due to COVID-19. Day performed the song independently, without a crowd, as a part of a 360° livestream series in partnership with MelodyVR.[7]

Critical reception

American Songwriter called the song "sexy psychedelic and cinematic romp that would have made for the perfect 007 theme song".[8]
