Muay Thai at the 2022 World Games

The Muay Thai tournaments at the 2021 World Games in Birmingham will take place in July 2022 at the Boutwell Memorial Auditorium.[1] Originally scheduled to take place in July 2021, the Games have been rescheduled for July 2022 as a result of the 2020 Summer Olympics postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[2] It was the second time of Muay Thai including in the World Games.[3]

Competition format

The number of weight classes for men was reduced from 8 to 6, with the women's weight classes having a corresponding increase from 3 to 6. It was the first time that Muay Thai event achieved full gender equality.[4]

Qualifying criteria

Each National Olympic Committee was permitted to enter up to one athlete in each event. Twelve places (six both men and women) were reserved for the host nation United States.[5][6]

All other places will be allocated through three Continental Championships or Qualification Tournaments and World Championship Events (one each for Asia, Oceania and Europe) in 2020 and 2021.

Participation

Muay Thai athletes were the first qualifiers of the 2021 World Games. The 2017 World Games champion in men's light welterweight, Igor Liubchenko of Ukraine was the first Muay Thai athlete in the history to qualify for two consecutive Games after he qualified through 2019 Arafura Games.[7]
