Mongla Export Processing Zone

Mongla Export Processing Zone or Mongla EPZ[1] (Bengali: মংলা রপ্তানী প্রক্রিয়াকরণ এলাকা) is one of the eight export processing zones under BEPZA (Bangladesh Export Processing Zone Authority).[2][3]


It's located in Mongla which is adjacent to Port of Mongla. Like any of the export processing zones, Mongla EPZ is headed by a General Manager. Mongla Export Processing Zone is governed by BEPZA which is one of the wings of the Prime Minister's Office.[4][5] The current chairman of BEPZA is Major General Md Habibur Rahman Khan.[6]

History

Mongla Export Processing Zone was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina on May 23, 1998.[7] The zone has received investment from 29 companies as of 2015, of which 16 have gone into production and rest are under construction.[8] The zone has faced criticism for having some environmentally harmful industries.[9] Mongla EPZ performance has been below government expectations.[10]
