History
The original Miracle-Gro company, Miracle-Gro Products, Inc, was founded by marketing executive Horace Hagedorn and nurseryman Otto Stern[1] in 1950[2]
Hagedorn's first wife Peggy is credited with coming up with the Miracle-Gro product brand name and Hagedorn its distinctive package design.[3][4]
Hagedorn bought out Stern in the 1980s.
In 1995 Miracle Gro merged with Scotts;[5] his son Jim is CEO and Chairman of the merged company.[6]
Hagedorn retired from the business in 1997.
Horace Hagedorn died in 2005 at his Sands Point home, just short of his 90th birthday.[7]
Otto Stern, the co-founder, was the uncle of noted historian Fritz Stern.
In The Five Germanys I Have Known Fritz Stern mentions his very rich cousin Otto who had invented Miracle-Gro.[8]
