History

It is not clearly known that how the term "military hotel" was coined. According to an artist and art historian Suresh Jayaram, after Shahaji Bhonsle's conquer of Bangalore in 1638, most of these hotels were run by his men and the Maratha descendants, and as they were military people, the hotels got this name. A prefix "Hindu" was added here to clarify that they don't serve beef or pork. And there are some people who think that these hotels used to serve mainly the soldiers of Bangalore, both British and Indian, and that's how it got the name. According to Rajiv L, owner of Shivaji Military Hotel in Jayanagar, South Bangalore, the soldiers used these hotels as a meeting place and plan their campaigns. Shivaji Military Hotel is one of the oldest military hotels in the city and it was established in 1924.[1]
