Personal life

In June 2016, during a medical checkup prior to the beginning of the season 2016/17, Van Damme was diagnosed with leukemia.[3] One year later he was cured and signed a new contract with Cercle until June 2019.[4] Van Damme recovered and despite still needing medication on a daily basis, he was able to play in the 2017–18 Belgian Cup on 20 September 2017 against Genk. In January 2020 Van Damme relapsed from leukemia en doctors gave him not much hope[5]. Despite this tragic news, he received immunotherapy. Today he is still recovering from his disease. He got a new 1-year contract with Cercle on 16 June 2020[6].
