Early life and education

Obeng was born in Ghana in 1973.[3] At age 15, he met medical professionals from Operation Smile, who helped a neighbor whose husband had thrown acid on her face by providing her with scar revision therapy.[4] When asked about this experience, Obeng stated " That, coupled with the premature death of my mother and grandmother due to complications of decubitus ulcer, propelled me to seek a career as a physician and a plastic surgeon...".[4]

At age 20, Obeng immigrated to the United States with less than $200 to attend undergrad at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.[4] Obeng would graduate magna cum laude with a B.S. in Chemistry and received his M.D. degree from the University of Texas Medical School.[5] Obeng also received a fellowship to Harvard Medical School, specializing in hand, wrist and microneurovascular surgery.[3] In 2016, Obeng gave the commencement address at his alma mater Midwestern State University.[6]

Career

In 2015, Obeng and his then wife Veronika,[7] agreed to participate in the E! reality television series Second Wives Club.[8] In 2016, Obeng filed a lawsuit towards E! and their parent company NBCUniversal seeking an injunction barring the network from airing the episodes that include him and his children.[9][10]

In 2018, Obeng made national headlines for successfully performing forehead reduction surgery.[11] Obeng was covered extensively by Inside Edition, MSN and AOL.[11][12][13] In 2019, Obeng again made headlines for successfully performing the once-controversial rib removal surgery on Justin Jedlica.[14]

Obeng has served a plastic surgery consultant for a variety of print and television publications such as the Inquisitr in regards to socialite Kim Kardashian's facial structure changes throughout her career.[15]

Philanthropy

In 2008, Obeng started the non-profit R.E.S.T.O.R.E.[16] This organization provides free reconstructive surgery and medical services to children and adults in African countries with disfiguring deformities from birth, accidents and diseases.[17] R.E.S.T.O.R.E. has successfully completed over 500 surgeries since its inception.[16] Obeng has donated more than $300,000 to this cause.[18]

In 2013, Obeng won the NAACP Humanitarian Award for his work with R.E.S.T.O.R.E alongside Vanessa Williams, Loretta Devine, and Maxine Anderson.[19]
