Kate's daughter Martha Wainwright appears on the album as a backing vocalist; she is also directly mentioned in the lyrics of the title track.

The title "Matapédia" refers to the river in eastern Quebec which runs down to the town of Matapédia, Quebec and then out into baie des Chaleurs. The rhythm of the river is supposed to be the inspiration for the loping beat of the album's title track.

The album won the Juno Award for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year - Group at the Juno Awards of 1997.

gollark: Under normal circumstances, I just buy a new one and copy data back on.
gollark: You should buy the nonexplosive kind.
gollark: Yes, I know flash unthingies after some time.
gollark: It's just attached to my keyring, it only gets plugged in when I need to update stuff on it.
gollark: In case of spontaneous implosions of all my computers, I think I would just have to find a working computer with Linux on it, decrypt my USB thing, and use the SSH keys on it to access osmarkscloud™.
