MasterChef Canada (season 3)

The third season of MasterChef Canada originally aired on February 14, 2016 and concluded on June 19. Filming began in September 2015 and ended in November 2015. Torontonian Mary Berg won this season to become the first female champion. Following her victory, Berg pursued her passion for food through catering, confections, recipe development and as a cooking expert on CTV's Your Morning, The Social, and The Marilyn Denis Show.[1][2] Berg also guest starred in an episode of Season 4 and Season 5.[3] She now hosts her own original cooking show, Mary's Kitchen Crush, which premiered on CTV on April 28, 2019.[4]

The 18 home cooks that earned at least two yes's from the judges were tasked to create a Mise en place to earn a spot in the top 14. Sean's is deemed to be the best of all and he earns a place. Robyn, Ernie, Fanassa, Domingo, Alawn and Kendra were all eliminated, while Jacqueline, Julia and Matthew are advanced. For the remaining eight cooks (David, Elizabeth, Les, Michelle, Reno, Shawn, Travis and Veronica), their next challenge was to create a dish with the ingredients from the mise en place for the final four spots. Shawn and Michelle were advanced into the top 14. David was also advanced, while Reno was sent home. Veronica was then advanced into the top 14, sending Les, Elizabeth, and Travis home.

Mystery Box 1: This Mystery Box contained thirteen iconic Canadian ingredients, one from each province and territory. The top three dishes were Shawn's, Mary's, and Veronica's. Shawn was declared as the winner of the Mystery Box.

Elimination Test 1: Shawn received immunity from elimination, and then was shown the judges' heritage cuisine. He picked Claudio Aprile's South American ingredients as the task of the elimination challenge. For his third advantage, he was able to save two cooks from elimination. He picked Terry and Vince. The best two dishes were Matthew's and Michelle's. The worst three dishes belonged to Jennifer, David and Veronica. David was eliminated.

Team Challenge 1: The cooks were tasked to serve 121 firefighters with a baby pork rib entree, along with two sides and a sauce. Matthew and Michelle were the captains of the Red and Blue Teams respectively. Matthew got to choose all five members of his team before Michelle. He chose Mary, Sean, Jeremy, Vince and Jacqueline to join him, forming the Red Team. This left Michelle with April Lee, Jennifer, Julia, Shawn, Terry and Veronica, forming the Blue Team. With a difference of 20 votes, the Blue Team was declared as the winner of the challenge.

Pressure Test 1: For the pressure test, the cooks were tasked to bake a tower of 24 cupcakes with at least three different flavors. Matthew was given the option to save himself and one of his teammates. Matthew saved Jeremy from the pressure test. Jacqueline and Mary were both sent to safety, with Mary's cupcakes being deemed the best, leaving Sean and Vince as the bottom two. Vince was eliminated.

Mystery Box 2: This Mystery Box required the home cooks to work in pairs. The pairs were Mary and Matthew; Jeremy and Jacqueline; Terry and Jennifer; Julia and April Lee; Michelle and Veronica; and Sean and Shawn. The top three dishes were Julia and April Lee's; Jeremy and Jacqueline's; and Terry and Jennifer's. Terry and Jennifer were declared as the winning pair.

Elimination Test 2: Terry and Jennifer were immune from the upcoming elimination, and were shown eight different fish to which they will assign for the other contestants to cook. They also chose two home cooks to be saved from elimination. Targeting Jeremy, April Lee and Mary, they assigned monkfish to Jeremy, hake to April Lee, steelhead trout to Mary, British Columbia sturgeon to Sean, Spanish mackarel to Jacqueline, sole to Michelle, red mullet to Veronica, and branzino to Matthew, leaving Shawn and Julia to receive immunity. The two best dishes were Veronica's and Jacqueline's, making them team captains for the next team challenge. Mary and Sean were called out for having the two worst fish dishes. Sean was eliminated.

Team Challenge 2: For this team challenge, the cooks were tasked to cook a three-course lunch for sixteen fashion elites. Each team had to create one vegetarian, one seafood, and one meat dish for the guests to share. Veronica and Jacqueline were the Red and Blue Team captains respectively. Veronica chose Matthew, Michelle, Julia and April Lee for her Red Team. Jacqueline chose Mary, Jeremy, Shawn and Jennifer for her Blue Team. The judges gave Terry the option to choose which team to join. Terry chose to join Veronica's Red Team. Jacqueline's Blue Team was declared as the winner.

Pressure Test 2: The home cooks from the Red Team were tasked to cook a butter-poached lobster dish in only 20 minutes. Veronica was given the option to save herself or one of her teammates. She decided to exempt Michelle. Matthew, April Lee and Veronica are all sent to safety. This left Julia and Terry as the bottom two. The judges announce that there will be a second pressure test to determine which of them will be sent home today. The second pressure test required Julia and Terry to recreate a dish of steak au poivre in only 15 minutes. Terry was deemed to have performed better and Julia was sent home.

Mystery Box 3: This Mystery Box contained basic ingredients needed to produce a baked dessert and a heart-shaped tin. The top three dishes were Veronica's, Terry's, and Shawn's. The judges declared Veronica to be the winner, and her recipe was also featured in a Becel advertising campaign.

Elimination Test 3: Veronica was safe from elimination. Veronica was allowed to choose four home cooks that will be cooking with the canned version of the theme ingredient instead of fresh. She decided to give the canned ingredient to Jeremy, Mary, Jacqueline and April Lee. The special ingredient was revealed to be pumpkin. Shawn's was named as the winning dish with Mary and Terry placing second and third respectively. Jennifer, April Lee and Michelle were called out for having the worst three dishes. The judges decided to send Michelle home.

Team Challenge 3: For this three-way team challenge, the cooks arrived at Mississauga's Hansa Haus and had to cook gourmet sausage dishes with a topping and a side for their 250 guests in celebration of Oktoberfest. The team with the most sales was safe from elimination. Shawn, Mary and Terry were the captains of the Red, Blue and Green Teams respectively. Shawn chose pork for his sausages, while Mary chose lamb, leaving Terry with beef. Shawn chose Jeremy and Jacqueline for his Red Team, Mary chose Veronica and Matthew for her Blue Team, while Terry chose April Lee and Jennifer for his Green Team. Terry's Green Team was declared as the winner of the challenge.

Pressure Test 3: The judges announced that one member each from the Red and Blue Teams were exempted from the pressure test, and that all members from both teams will be deciding who will be safe. The Red Team decided to save Jeremy, while the Blue Team decided to send Veronica to safety. The rest had to prepare freshly made ricotta cheese and then create a ravioli dish and a gnudi dish all within one hour. Mary was the first to be sent to safety. This left Jacqueline, Shawn, and Matthew on the bottom 3 to face elimination. Jacqueline was eliminated.

Team Challenge 4: The home cooks were split into two teams and were tasked to create a menu of four dishes each using the heads, shoulders, knees and toes of various animals in 90 minutes. In a random draw of selections, the Blue Team consisted of April Lee, Jennifer, Jeremy and Mary, while the Red Team consisted of Matthew, Shawn, Terry and Veronica. There were no team captains in this challenge. The Red Team decided on an Asian themed menu, while the Blue Team created elevated versions of old favourite recipes. The judges decided the Red Team to be the winner of this team challenge.

Pressure Test 4: April Lee, Jennifer, Jeremy and Mary were tasked to bake four éclairs in 90 minutes which consists of four different toppings. Jeremy and April Lee were sent to safety, leaving Jennifer and Mary to face elimination. Jennifer was eliminated.

Mystery Box 4: Retired astronaut Chris Hadfield was a special guest for this Mystery Box Challenge. This Mystery Box involved the cooks to create one dish using space food in 45 minutes. The top three dishes belonged to Matthew, Veronica, and Mary. Matthew was declared to have the best dish.

Elimination Test 4: Matthew decided the teams in the upcoming tag team challenge, where the cooks were tasked to replicate an exquisite platter consisting of five different hors d'oeuvres. Targeting to eliminate and send Mary home, he chose to pair up Mary with Jeremy, Veronica with April Lee, leaving Shawn and Terry as the final team by default. Mary and Jeremy managed to create the best hors d'oeuvres platter, making them team captains in the upcoming restaurant takeover. Shawn and Terry were the losing team of the challenge left on the bottom two to face elimination, in part because Terry had incorrectly put the wrong filling in the wrong hor d'oeuvres ceviche but Shawn failed to notice this mistake. The judges eliminated and sent Terry home.

Team Challenge 5: The top six home cooks took part in the annual restaurant takeover in Alvin Leung's restaurant located in Toronto's Chinatown: R&D, co-founded with MasterChef Canada season one winner Eric Chong. The guests consisted of MasterChef Canada alumni, including season two winner David Jorge. Mary led the Red Team with Veronica and April Lee, while Jeremy led the Blue Team with Matthew and Shawn. The judges decided that the women on the Red Team have performed better overall.

Pressure Test 5: Jeremy, Matthew, and Shawn were tasked to bake their own customized version of a Charlotte cake in one hour. Jeremy was the first to be sent to safety. While both Matthew and Shawn's cakes had critical flaws, the judges decided to advance Matthew, meaning Shawn was sent home.

Elimination Test 5: Matthew was immune from elimination. The remaining four home cooks were required to create two dishes in 90 minutes, one savory and one sweet, using key ingredients in four classic cocktails. As his second advantage, Matthew assigned one of the cocktails to each home cook. Targeting to eliminate Mary and Veronica, Matthew assigned Bloody Mary (vodka, chili pepper, and tomato) to Mary, Mint julep (bourbon, mint, and sugar) to Veronica, Piña colada (rum, coconut, and pineapple) to April Lee, and Irish coffee (whiskey, coffee, and cream) to Jeremy. Individual Challenge: The final four remaining cooks were surprised in the kitchen by their families, who also joined them for a trip to Toronto's St. Lawrence Market. The cook with the best dish will automatically be advanced straight to the top three semifinals, leaving the remaining cooks to battle it out in a replication pressure test where one cook will be eliminated. The judges decide that Mary's dish was the best of the challenge.

Pressure Test 6: After bidding goodbyes to their families, Jeremy, Matthew and Veronica donned on their black aprons to face this next replication Pressure Test. They were tasked to recreate three sea scallop dishes, a trio of scallops served with pea pureé, a Coquilles San Jacques and a raw scallop crudo. They were tasked to open the sea scallop straight from the shell, and were given only the exact number of fresh sea scallops required to replicate all three dishes. Jeremy was the first to be sent to safety, leaving Matthew and Veronica as the bottom two. Veronica was sent home.

Mystery Box 6: In the Season 3 Top 3 semifinals, the final 3 remaining semifinalists were tasked to prepare sixteen individual plates of an entrée for the 3 judges and thirteen of Canada's most influential professional chefs/restaurateurs in 90 minutes. The ingredients were the exact same Canadian ingredients from the first Mystery Box challenge in this season. The winner of the challenge will advance straight to the finale, while the remaining two semifinalists will go head to head in the final replication pressure test of the season. Mary was declared as the winner of the challenge, winning her a spot in the finale.

Pressure Test 7: Jeremy and Matthew will go head-to-head in the last pressure test of the season. The theme is citrus-infused desserts, in which Jeremy and Matthew were tasked to replicate three very technically challenging desserts in 90 minutes; white chocolate ganache with grapefruit loaf croutons and mint ice cream, lime mousse-filled choux covered with coconut sablé, and matcha tart filled with yuzu and lemon curd with browned meringue sesame snaps, finger limes and gold leaves. The judges decided that Matthew's performance just falls short of the mark, thereby sending him home and Jeremy will be joining Mary in the finale.

Mary and Jeremy compete in a three-course challenge in the grand finale to determine the winner. For appetizers, Mary has golden beet borscht with horseradish goat's cheese mousse, beet-cured trout, and caraway crumb, while Jeremy has bison tataki with uni cream, lotus chips, and tataki sauce. For entrées, Jeremy has sushi boat consisting of a deconstructed spider roll with soft shell crab, a marinated baby octopus with mushrooms, a tuna crunch roll with wasabi mayo and crispy salmon skin, and a ginger papaya salad, while Mary has surf and turf with beef tenderloin, fried oysters, and arugula and sea asparagus pesto. For desserts, Jeremy has milk tea panna cotta with coconut tapioca, fried plantains, and jackfruit ice cream, while Mary has blueberry financier with brown butter crumb, kettle corn, blueberry sauce, and buttermilk corn ice cream. Mary is declared as the season three winner, becoming the first female and vegetarian winner of MasterChef Canada.
