Mansoor Alam

Mansoor Alam (14 April 1944 – 16 October 2017) was a Pakistani diplomat who served as Pakistan's ambassador to five countries and was an accredited ambassador to seven countries.[1]

Foreign Service Career

Ambassadorial Posts held:

  • 2000-Russia and Finland. Played a crucial role in arranging Pakistani Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif’s two-day state visit to Russia and in dealing with issues of nuclear capability.[2] It was the first time in some twenty-five years that a Pakistani leader had visited Russia. At that time, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s visit to Moscow was considered the single most important diplomatic event in recent Pakistan-Russian relations for the previous fifty years.[3][4]
  • 1997-Egypt. He served as Pakistani Ambassador in Egypt during the 1997.[5]
  • 1994-United Arab Emirates. He played a role in persuading PM Benazir Bhutto to start her foreign visits with UAE after she was elected PM for the second time.[3][6]
  • 1990 Mexico, with concurrent accreditation to Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Cuba, El Salvador, Venezuela and Belize. He was critical to the trade agreements put in place and fostering better understanding between these nations and Pakistan.[7][8]
  • 1966-2002 career diplomat served in Embassies in different countries inc Head of Mission in London 1984-86 and Director General Middle-East 1986-1989.[5]

He served as Director General of Foreign Service Academy from 28 August 2000 to 30 June 2002.[9]

Humanitarian

After retiring from diplomatic life, he set up an NGO where he provided free education and basic medical coverage to over 10,000 disenfranchised children in urban slums and rural areas in Pakistan, India and Nepal.

Chairman of NGO FLAME (Friends of Literacy and Mass Education)[10][11]

  • Founded FLAME in 2001. It is a Registered charity in Pakistan, UK and USA. It provides free primary level education to the poorest and underprivileged children of all ages in Pakistan and some in India with a vision to incorporate other SAARC countries.[12][13]

  • Founding member of Karachi Council on Foreign Relations Economic affairs and Law.[14]
  • Founding member of Pak-India Citizens Friendship Forum.[15]
  • Board Member of "Tameer" Micro Finance Bank (2007-8).[16]
