Malik (name)
Malik, Maleek, Malek or Malyk is a given name and surname. It can be an Anglicization of two different Semitic names. In Arabic the name: مَالِك, meaning "Owner", and مَلِك, meaning "King", and it has a similar meaning ("prince", "chief" etc.) among Assyrians and Mandeans[1]. The name has also been in use among historically pre-Arab Semitic speaking peoples since the Bronze Age in various forms such as Malka, Malku and examples can be found in Akkadian (aka Assyrian, Babylonian), Aramaic, Hebrew, Amorite, Phoenician and Syriac among others. It is also of unrelated West Slavic origin from the Polish word "mały" meaning "small" and found in Czech and Slovak names such as Malík.[2]
