In July 2020, it was announced Zendaya and John David Washington had joined the cast of the film, with Sam Levinson directing from a screenplay he wrote and finished in six days. The film was shot during the COVID-19 pandemic, beginning on June 17 and finishing on July 2. At the time, Zendaya and Levinson were both involved in the HBO show Euphoria, which had stopped production due to the pandemic. Shooting took place entirely at the Caterpillar House in Monterey County, California. The film followed local COVID-19 safety protocols, which included the entire cast and crew being quarantined during shooting, as well as two weeks before and after shooting, daily temperature checks, and increased sanitation measures, among other precautions.[1][2]
