Makerere University School of Law

The School of Law, Makerere University, is the premier School of Law in Uganda. The School was started in 1968 as a Department in the then Faculty of Social Sciences. Later in 1970, the Department became a fully-fledged faculty giving birth to the Faculty of Law[8]. In 2012, the Universities and other Tertiary Institutions (Mnanagement of Constituent Colleges of Makerere University) Statute, 2012, was adopted, converting Makerere into a collegiate university[9]. Subsequently, the School started the process to become a College but chose to retain the name "School".[10]

Location

The school is located at Plot 8HH9+9V Kampala, Makerere University in one of the five administrative divisions of Kampala, the capital and largest city of Uganda, approximately 5.3 kilometres (3 mi), by road, north of the city centre. The coordinates of the school campus are: 0°19'42.0"N 32°36'59.0"E (Latitude: 0.328730; Longitude: 32.571210)[12]

Overview

The school was started by Makerere University in 1968[13]. At the time it was created, it had four departments. In 2010, the University transformed from faculties to a Collegiate system ad therefore the School of Law acquired a College status and it was to be headed by a Principal and a Deputy Principal. Sylvia Tamale was the first female dean in the Law Faculty at Makerere University [14] [15]
