Lucy Kocharyan

Lucy Kocharyan (born 1984) is an Armenian journalist who has taken a stand in her country against gender based violence. She was chosen as an International Women of Courage in March 2020 by the US Secretary of State.[1]

Life

Kocharyan was born in 1984 and became a journalist. She presents two programmes on Armenian Public Radio.[2]

In August 2018 she began to speak out about children with mental health issues[3] and gender-based violence launching a "Voices for Violence" campaign. Gender-based violence is a traditional part of her country and she has faced a lot of criticism for her position.[4]

She was chosen as an International Women of Courage in March 2020 by the US Secretary of State.[1] She was the first Armenian to win this award and the ceremony was attended by Anna Hakobyan who is the Armenian first lady.[5]

After the award she was taken on a tour of Fulton County Juvenile Court by Judge Renata D. Turner.[3]
